Year One
The fellows rotate for three months on the inpatient unit at the Huntsman Mental Health Institute (HMHI), a free-standing inpatient psychiatric facility, which has 66 child and adolescent inpatient beds, including a latency unit, two teen units, and a Comprehensive Assessment and Treatment Unit (CAT Program). HMHI has consistently been in the top tier of academic psychiatric facilities for the high-quality care that they provide. HMHI gets inpatient referrals from throughout Utah, five surrounding states, and the CAT program sees patients from all over the world.
Fellows also spend four months in the latency and adolescent day treatment programs at HMHI, which sees patients from all over Utah and three neighboring states. During these rotations, they work with adolescents with substance use disorders and advance their individual, group, and family therapy skills. They also work closely with our academic specialist to liaise with schools.
Fellows rotate on the Consult/Liaison and Crisis services at the nationally recognized Intermountain Primary Children's Hospital. Primary Children’s Hospital, owned by Intermountain Healthcare, is the tertiary referral center for Utah and six surrounding states. Fellows also spend an inpatient psychiatry month at Primary Children’s Inpatient Unit, located on the Wasatch Canyons Campus.
Fellows spend one month between the Jordan School District, working with the school psychologists, the Girls Transition Center, a residential program for adolescent girls in state’s custody, and the HMHI Crisis Service which includes the Mobile Crisis Outreach Teams, and the Safe UT teen text line.
Year Two
Fellows have one-year long outpatient Child & Adolescent Psychiatry continuity clinic located at the HMHI Downtown Clinic in Salt Lake City. They see integrated behavioral health referrals within a private practice pediatric clinic system, Wasatch Pediatrics. They have a year-long clinic at the HMHI HOME Program, which is a capitated multidisciplinary medical home for patients with comorbid developmental and psychiatry illnesses. They get a comprehensive autism testing and treatment experience with the Autism Spectrum Diagnostic Clinic. Fellows complete their child neurology training at Primary Children’s Hospital. They spend time in the Safe and Healthy Families program at Primary Children’s Hospital, working with child abuse pediatricians and trauma mental health specialists. The second year is rounded out by working with a developmental pediatrician, seeing normal children, performing developmental evaluations, and choosing elective opportunities, which can include working at The Children’s Center, a preschool mental health day program.
