Obstetric Anesthesia
Expert Obstetric Care and Family-Centered Birth Experience
At the University of Utah Hospital, a team of highly skilled obstetricians, midwives, nurses, and anesthesiologists work together to ensure a safe, comfortable, and family-friendly birth experience for both patients and their newborns. Recognized as a Center of Excellence by the Society for Obstetric Anesthesia and Perinatology since 2019, we manage approximately 5,000 deliveries annually, including specialized care as an accreta referral center. Our labor and delivery floor features three operating rooms, two of which are directly connected to the newborn intensive care unit (NICU) for immediate access to specialized care when needed.
24/7 Obstetric Anesthesia Services
Our labor and delivery unit is supported by a dedicated obstetric anesthesia team consisting of board-certified anesthesiologists and anesthesia resident physicians. Available 24/7, this team provides labor pain relief, anesthesia for cesarean deliveries, postpartum tubal ligations, cerclage placements, and emergency situations. Beyond traditional epidural pain relief, we offer additional pain management options such as inhaled nitrous oxide.
Specialized Care for High-Risk Pregnancies
Our obstetric anesthesia team specializes in caring for high-risk pregnancies, including those complicated by cardiac disease, bleeding disorders, pre-eclampsia, and placental abnormalities. We welcome patients with high-risk pregnancies or anesthesia-related concerns to our obstetric anesthesia consultation clinic. Additionally, we manage anesthesia for fetal interventions and non-obstetric procedures during pregnancy, providing comprehensive support to both pregnant patients and newborns.
