Advancing Discovery in Anesthesiology and Patient Care

The Department of Anesthesiology at the University of Utah is leading clinical research that drives safer, more effective care for patients before, during, and after surgery. Our investigators study everything from pain management and chronic conditions to patient safety, perioperative outcomes, and innovative technologies that improve how care is delivered.

Our goal is to translate discovery into practice—helping patients heal faster, experience less pain, and receive the safest, highest-quality anesthesia and perioperative care possible.

This page is a new resource highlighting active research studies within the Department of Anesthesiology. It will continue to grow as new projects begin enrollment, so please check back regularly for updates.

Exploring a new approach to fibromyalgia and chronic pain

Researchers at the University of Utah are studying whether metformin, a medication commonly used for Type II diabetes, could help reduce pain and inflammation in people with fibromyalgia or chronic widespread pain.

If you are 18–75 years old, have fibromyalgia or chronic widespread pain, and have not been diagnosed with diabetes, you may qualify to participate.
