Outreach & Engagement Opportunities at the U and Beyond

  • Volunteer to be a judge at the Utah Science and Engineering Fair (USEF)! This science competition is held for students in grades 5-12 from many local school districts, and is held annually in March. This is the state's final competition, after district level competitions are held.
  • Join our local University of Utah SACNAS chapter! SACNAS regularly sends volunteers to local elementary schools to talk about science.

  • Give workshops to youth-in-custody as part of the STEM Community Alliance Program (STEMCAP)! Scientists (including faculty, postdocs, and graduate students) can work with STEMCAP staff to develop scientific presentations that are tailored to incarcerated youth.
  • Volunteer for the Utah Prison Education Project, which organizes educational programs, workshops, and guest lectures at the Utah State Correctional Facility.
  • Become a Science Communication Fellow through the Natural History Museum of Utah (NHMU)! The Science Communications Fellows program provides training to scientists and researchers to improve their science communication, especially in an informal science education setting.
  • Volunteer with the REFUGES program to support the science education for underrepresented 7th-12th grade students. The REFUGES program supports after school and summer programs.
  • Volunteer with University Neighborhood Partners to bring together University and west side people and resources in reciprocal learning, action, and benefit!
  • Volunteer with Utah STEM Fest! Utah STEM fest is a free yearly event that offers students opportunities to engage with interactive experiences and explore STEM career opportunities.
  • Participate in "Skype a Scientist," a program that pairs K-12 teachers with researchers. Researchers “skype” into the classroom to talk to students about science and research.
  • Many local elementary schools host a STEM day in the spring as well as Career days throughout the year, and are often looking for people in STEM fields who can participate. Get in touch with your local elementary school to inquire about when their STEM or Career day is and how you can get involved!
