Our residents have access to many unique educational opportunities and a proactive approach to one's own education is fostered and encouraged. We expect our residents to be academically curious and pursue a scholarly project of their interest. Through our mentorship program, residents work with one or multiple mentors to identify a fulfilling academic pursuit.
Significant time each week is devoted to resident education and department conferences.
Didactic Conferences
- Monday Morning (8-9 AM): IN2SKIN/Morning report
- Tuesday afternoon (1-5 PM): Text review, dermatopathology teaching, kodachrome sessions
- Friday morning (7 AM-12 PM): Grand Rounds, Journal Clubs, faculty lectures, Project in Progress
Clinical Conferences
- Monthly cutaneous lymphoma conference
- Weekly multidisciplinary tumor board for locally advanced and metastatic cutaneous oncology patients (melanoma, squamous cell carcinoma, basal cell carcinoma, rare cutaneous tumors)
- Weekly inpatient teaching rounds
We have a unique funding mechanism for resident research that is lead by former dermatology residents Drs. Mark Herron and Clive Liu. A strong resident alumni network makes generous annual donations to fund resident research. Typically over $30,000 is available for current residents to perform research annually. We are committed to giving our residents the time, money, and mentorship to pursue their academic interests. Residents are expected to choose a project and publish their findings.

Resident research funding was integral to getting my clinical trial (HPV vaccination for cutaneous warts) up and running. Although I was able to use another grant from Merck to obtain study drug, the resident research funds were used to pay for much needed clinical research support staff. As I'm sure you know, clinical research is a team effort and there is absolutely no way we could have gotten the trial started without our excellent clinical research coordinators.

The Casino Night fundraiser was instrumental in advancing our tinea research project by providing much-needed funds for medical record extraction, analysis, and data collection.
