Advancing Therapies and Biomarkers for Acral Melanoma

Drs. Martin McMahon, Robert Judson-Torres, and Doug Grossman are pursuing a project in collaboration with other members of the HCI Melanoma Center that focuses on therapeutics, models, and biomarkers of acral melanoma.

Identifying micro-RNAs as Objective Indicators of UV Exposure

Drs. Grossman, Judson-Torres, Dekker Deacon and Yelena Wu are also pursuing a new pilot project to identify micro-RNAs from skin that are associated with acute and chronic sun/UVR exposure. This study will be used as a first step toward developing an objective measure of UVR exposure.

microRNA Ratios as a Diagnostic Tool to Distinguish Acral Melanoma from Acral Nevi

Drs. Dekker Deacon, Rob Judson-Torres, and Doug Grossman collaborated on a study that found that microRNA ratios can reliably distinguish between malignant acral melanoma and benign acral nevi.

Understanding Precancerous Melanocyte Fields in Patients Predisposed to Melanoma

Companion project: Developing a Non-Invasive microRNA Tape Test for Early Skin Cancer Detection

Drs. Judson-Torres and Grossman are collaborating on a project examining precancerous subclinical fields of melanocytes in normal skin of patients who are predisposed to nevi and melanoma.

    • They are also collaborating on a project using adhesive tape to recover microRNAs from suspicious skin lesions prior to biopsy to develop a non-invasive diagnostic test for skin cancers.

Dietary Patterns and Inflammatory Skin Disease: A Stable Isotope Pilot Study

Dr. Zachary Hopkins and Dr. Scott Florell are collaborating on a pilot study that gathers person-level data on stable isotope ratio operating characteristics and distributions across several patient groups with inflammatory skin disease. This pilot study will provide preliminary data for future studies that assess relationships between dietary patterns and inflammatory skin disease incidence, severity, and response to treatment.

3D Imaging of Cutaneous Nerve Fibers to Improve Diagnosis and Treatment of Burning Mouth Syndrome

Drs. Zachary Hopkins, John Zone, and Christopher Hull are collaborating on a pilot study that uses three-dimensional imaging of cutaneous nerve fiber structure of burning mouth syndrome. The preliminary data will support future studies that use three-dimensional imaging to explore changes in cutaneous nerve fiber structure with different treatments, and to assess its potential in improving burning mouth syndrome characterization and personalized treatment.

    Collaborations between departments

Smartphone App to Promote Sun Safety Among Melanoma Survivors

Dr. Tammy Stump has an ongoing collaboration with Dr. Jason Wiese from the School of Computing on several projects, including a National Institutes of Health-funded project (R34) to develop a smartphone app to promote sun safety behaviors among melanoma survivors.

Topical Delivery of Small Molecules and microRNAs for Melanoma Prevention

Dr. Rob Judson-Torres is collaborating with Dr. Ghandehari in the College of Pharmacy an NIH R01 to develop and validate methods for the topical delivery of small molecules and microRNAs to melanocytic lesions for melanoma prevention. This collaboration has produced co-training environments for graduate and post-doctoral students to generate expertise in both the chemistry of drug delivery mechanisms and the biology of skin and melanocytes.

Novel Skin Electrical Property Device for Non-Invasive Skin Cancer Detection

Dr. Grossman and Dr. Florell have been collaborating with Dr. Benjamin Sanchez (Department of Electrical Engineering) and were awarded an R21 to test a novel device that measures electrical properties of the skin for non-invasive detection of skin cancers.

Establishing a Biobank to Advance Psoriatic Arthritis Screening and Commercialization

Dr. Bing Feng is collaborating with Dr. James Hotaling to establish a tissue sample biobank, supported by industrial partners. They will utilize the biobank to develop and work to commercialize a Psoriatic Arthritis screening tool.

Using Hair Protein Isotope Analysis to Study Diet in Inflammatory Skin Disease

Dr. Scott Florell is collaborating with Dr. Thure Cerling from the Department of Geology & Geophysics and Dr. Amy Reeder from the Department of Nutrition & Integrative Physiology in a pilot study to obtain preliminary data that assesses feasibility of a novel stable isotope analysis-based technique to assess dietary make-up from hair proteins. With the support of this preliminary data, they have plans to study hair isotope make-up across different inflammatory skin diseases and their severities.

Improving Ergonomic Performance in Procedural Dermatology Teams

Companion project: Evaluating Patient Satisfaction Trends Across Specialties Over 10 Years

Dr. Alice Frigerio is collaborating with Beth Cardell, PhD, OTR/L and Yvonne Savarise, DPT to promote healthy ergonomic performance among Mohs surgeons and histology technicians as well as other staff members involved with hands-on procedural dermatology.  Their project includes ergonomic assessments, focused intervention and outcome studies.

    • She is also collaborating with Kristine Smith, MD, FRCSC with the Department of Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery, looking at patient satisfaction scores by specialty at the University of Utah Health over a 10-year period.
