2026-2027 Third Year Fellows
Dr. Kate Alta is a Chief Fellow and third-year Cardiovascular Disease fellow. She earned her Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree from Rocky Vista University College of Osteopathic Medicine in 2020 and completed her combined Internal Medicine-Pediatrics residency at the Medical College of Wisconsin in 2024.
Dr. Sujana Balla is a third-year Cardiovascular Disease Fellow. She earned her medical degree from M.S. Ramaiah Medical College in India in 2019 and completed her Internal Medicine residency at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) Fresno in 2024 where she served as Chief resident for a year.
Dr. Kellen Hirsch is a T32-funded third-year Cardiovascular Disease Fellow. He earned his medical degree from the University of Colorado School of Medicine in 2020 and completed his Internal Medicine residency at the University of Washington in 2023.
Dr. Diane Lu is a third-year Cardiovascular Disease Fellow in the Physician-Scientist Track. She earned her medical degree from National Yang-Ming University in Taiwan in 2007 and completed her Internal Medicine residency at the University of Utah in 2024.
Dr. Deborah Peana is a third-year Cardiovascular Disease Fellow in the Physician-Scientist Track. She earned her medical degree from the University of Missouri–Columbia in 2022 and completed her Internal Medicine residency at the University of Utah in 2024.
Dr. Chloe Theeuwes is a third-year Cardiovascular Disease Fellow. She earned her medical degree from Wayne State University School of Medicine in 2021 and completed her Internal Medicine residency at the University of Cincinnati in 2024.
2026-2027 Second Year Fellows
Dr. Kate Callander is a second-year Cardiovascular Disease Fellow. She earned her medical degree from the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in 2018. Following medical school, she completed two years of Family Medicine residency training at the University of South Florida before transitioning to Internal Medicine, which she completed at the University of Vermont Medical Center in 2024. Prior to beginning fellowship, Dr. Callander dedicated an additional year to cardiovascular research.
Dr. Adiya Jaffari is a second-year Cardiovascular Disease Fellow. She earned her medical degree from the University of Washington School of Medicine in 2021 and completed her Internal Medicine residency at the University of Washington Medical Center in 2024. Following residency, Dr. Jaffari served as a Cardiology Hospitalist for one year, gaining additional experience in the management of complex cardiovascular patients before beginning her fellowship training.
Dr. Ethan Krauspe is a second-year Cardiovascular Disease Fellow. He earned his medical degree from the Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine in 2021 and completed his Internal Medicine residency at the University of Utah Medical Center in 2024. Following residency, Dr. Krauspe served as Chief Resident at the University of Utah prior to starting fellowship.
Dr. Ree Lu is a second-year Cardiovascular Disease Fellow. He earned his medical degree from the Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons in 2022 and completed his Internal Medicine residency at Columbia University Irving Medical Center in 2025.
Dr. Alex Quinn is a second-year Cardiovascular Disease Fellow. He earned his medical degree from Ross University School of Medicine in 2020 and completed his Internal Medicine residency at Temple University Hospital in 2023. Following residency, Dr. Quinn served as Chief Resident at Temple University Hospital.
Dr. Pam Ropski is a second-year Cardiovascular Disease Fellow. She earned her medical degree from the University of Utah School of Medicine in 2021 and completed her Internal Medicine residency at McGaw Medical Center of Northwestern University in 2024. Following residency, Dr. Ropski served as Chief Resident at McGaw Medical Center prior to starting fellowship.
Dr. Karl Wallenkampf is a Chief Fellow and second-year Cardiovascular Disease Fellow. He earned his medical degree from Loma Linda University School of Medicine in 2021 and completed his Internal Medicine residency at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis in 2024. Following residency, Dr. Wallenkampf served as Chief Resident at Washington University prior to starting fellowship.
2026-2027 First Year Fellows
Dr. Tess Calcagno is a first-year Cardiovascular Disease Fellow. She earned her medical degree from the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine in 2023 and completed her Internal Medicine residency at Cleveland Clinic in 2026. Prior to pursuing medicine, Dr. Calcagno completed a Doctor of Pharmacy program at Duquesne University, graduating in 2019.
Dr. Cody Kelso is a first-year Cardiovascular Disease Fellow. He earned his medical degree from the University at Buffalo, State University of New York, in 2022 and completed his Internal Medicine residency at UPMC in 2026.
Dr. Jacy Leon is a first-year Cardiovascular Disease Fellow. He earned his medical degree from Ohio State in 2022 and Internal Medicine residency in 2025. Following residency, Dr. Leon served as Chief Resident at the University of Utah prior to starting fellowship.
Dr. Karl Lundin is a first-year Cardiovascular Disease Fellow. He earned his medical degree from Baylor College of Medicine in 2022 and completed his combined Internal Medicine–Pediatrics residency training at Baylor College of Medicine in 2026.
Dr. Nelson Pham is a first-year Cardiovascular Disease Fellow. He earned his medical degree from the Università degli Studi di Milano Faculty of Medicine and Surgery in Milan, Italy, in 2022 and completed his Internal Medicine residency at the University of Arizona in 2026.
Dr. Avneesh Sharma is a first-year Cardiovascular Disease Fellow. He earned his medical degree from the Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine in 2023 and completed his Internal Medicine residency at the University of Virginia in 2026.
Dr. Yichi Zhang is a first-year Cardiovascular Disease Fellow. He earned his medical degree from the Tulane University School of Medicine in 2023 and completed his Internal Medicine residency at Massachusetts General Hospital in 2026.
