Michaela Edmond

Michaela Edmond, PhD

Michaela’s research interests include studying neural circuit physiology and the pathophysiology of traumatic brain injury (TBI) and post-traumatic epilepsy (PTE). Michaela completed her PhD in Cellular Physiology and Molecular Biophysics at the University of Miami, where she studied the biophysical properties of a voltage-gated potassium ion channel and how genetically inherited mutations lead to channel dysfunction, and ultimately, neurological diseases such as epilepsy. She joined the Sawant-Pokam Lab in January 2023 and her current work focuses on the functional role of ion channels and transporters in neuronal and glial cells, and how their dysfunction contributes to TBI pathophysiology and the development of PTE. Michaela uses in-vivo and ex-vivo electrophysiological techniques, as well as two-photon imaging, to uncover the chronic changes in neural network signaling after TBI in mice. When Michaela is not in the lab, she enjoys being outside with her dog, practicing yoga, and playing soccer.

Abigail Benser

Abigail Benser

Abigail Benser graduated from Westminster University with a Bachelor of Science in Neuroscience in December 2022. Abigail joined the Sawant-Pokam Lab in the summer of 2023 as a Laboratory Assistant. She has prior experience with EEG equipment, cell cultures, and invertebrates. With a strong passion for traumatic brain injuries and the brain, she will be working alongside members of the lab to further develop knowledge of cellular and molecular changes after a traumatic brain injury. Abigail is also interested in neurogenetics and has plans to obtain a PhD in that field. Abigail likes to spend time outside of the lab competing in snowboard cross where she hopes to represent Team USA at the Olympics.

Naomi Kemunto Kababe

Naomi Kababe is an undergraduate at the University of Utah, majoring in biomedical engineering. Originally from Kenya, Naomi came to Utah in 2021 to pursue her undergraduate studies. In January 2024, she joined the Pokam lab as a laboratory assistant, driven by her keen interest in future research endeavors. She is enthusiastic about gaining hands-on experience in research through this opportunity by learning about the mechanisms of cortical hyperexcitability after traumatic brain injury (TBI). Following the completion of her undergraduate degree, Naomi aspires to pursue a master's and PhD in biomedical engineering, with a focus on entering the pharmaceutical industry. In her free time, Naomi enjoys watching science fiction movies, traveling, experimenting with new recipes in the kitchen, and spending time with family and friends.

Jashanpreet Kaur

Jashanpreet Kaur is currently an undergraduate at the University of Utah. She is majoring in biomedical engineering. She is originally from Punjab, India. She moved to New York City in 2015 with her family. Then in 2020, they moved to West Valley City, Utah. After her undergrad, Jashanpreet plans to go to graduate school. With her degree, she plans on working in the industry. Through this lab, she hopes to gain knowledge about different mechanisms involving the traumatic brain injury. In general, she wants to gain as much experience she can and contribute to the current research. During Jashanpreet's free time, she enjoys spending time with her family and friends. She enjoys watching shows and listening to music.
