SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah Orthopaedic Center (UOC) has been recognized with a 2025 Energy to Care® Award from the American Society for Health Care Engineering (ASHE) of the American Hospital Association, a national honor that spotlights health care facilities making significant strides in reducing their environmental impact.
Between November 2023 and November 2024, the UOC achieved an impressive 25% reduction in energy use, marking a major milestone in the facility’s sustainability journey. This achievement exceeds ASHE’s benchmark of a 10% reduction over one year, placing the UOC among a select group of just 2.2% of participating facilities to receive the award this year.
“This award is a significant achievement for health care facilities taking meaningful steps toward reducing their environmental footprint, and I congratulate the University of Utah Orthopaedic Center team for reaching this milestone on their journey,” said Austin Wallace, MA, sustainability senior specialist at ASHE.
The Energy to Care® program helps health care facilities across the country track and reduce their energy, water, and greenhouse gas emissions using ASHE’s industry-specific tools and resources. Award recipients must submit their data through the Energy to Care Dashboard and demonstrate consistent, impactful improvements and will be recognized for this achievement at ASHE’s Health Care Facilities Innovation Conference in Columbus, Ohio, on July 28.
This recognition is a testament to the commitment and hard work of our facilities and operations teams. Their efforts make a real difference—not just in our carbon footprint, but in the health and well-being of the patients and communities we serve.
The University of Utah Orthopaedic Center joins a distinguished group of 97 health care facilities recognized nationally in 2025, including others within the University of Utah Health system such as the Sugarhouse Health Center, Moran Eye Center, and Madsen Clinic—all of which continue to prioritize sustainability and responsible resource management.
