Programs in Pathology
Teaching is a significant part of the Department of Pathology's mission. The scope of our curricula has increased over the years and now includes teaching and training of medical students, residents, medical and postdoctoral fellows, PhD students, dental students, nurses, physician assistants, graduate students, undergraduate students, and undergraduate students in medical laboratory science, as well as supporting a variety of continuing education programs. Total teaching contact hours for pathology faculty average more than 22,000 per academic year.
Residency Program
The Department of Pathology at the University of Utah offers postgraduate training in anatomic and clinical pathology, in clinical pathology only or anatomic pathology only. The residency training program is approved by the Residency Review Committee of Pathology and is fully accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME).
Fellowship Programs
The Department of Pathology at the University of Utah School of Medicine offers a range of subspecialty training opportunities, including 13 fellowship programs in anatomic, clinical, pediatric, and genetic pathology
PhD Graduate Program
The Department of Pathology at the University of Utah offers a doctorate degree in Microbiology and Immunology. This basic research program is managed by the Division of Microbiology & Immunology.
Master of Laboratory Medicine & Biomedical Science Program
The goal of the Masters Program is to enhance the understanding of disease, to teach knowledge to others, and to improve medical diagnosis and treatment of disease. Students can choose research projects in microbiology and immunology, clinical chemistry, toxicology, hematology, molecular diagnostics, microbiology and infectious diseases, genetics. The MS program currently accepts six to eight students/year.
Bachelor of Science Programs in the Division of Medical Laboratory Science
Medical laboratory science is the field where the challenges of medicine meet the complexities of science. Medical laboratory professionals can be found working in a number of different settings from doctor’s offices to hospitals, research labs to public health centers. MLS, pathology education
Medical Student Education
The department of pathology educates each class of about 100 students in the School of Medicine throughout their four-year curriculum. These courses provide students with broad knowledge in applied anatomic and clinical pathology.
