Minor in Medical Laboratory Science

The minor in Medical Laboratory Science complements STEM majors such as nursing, emergency medical services, kinesiology, biology, chemistry, and biomedical engineering.  Completion of the minor will provide students with a rich educational experience focused on diagnostic laboratory testing. It is particularly beneficial for students aiming to enhance their preparation for graduate programs in healthcare-related fields such as medicine, pharmacy, dentistry, nursing, and physician assistant studies.

Note that this minor does not qualify an individual to sit for any board examination in MLS. For those considering a second bachelor's degree in MLS after completing the minor, it may be possible to apply coursework from the minor towards the required coursework for the major. View the post-baccalaureate requirements.

Students pursuing a minor in MLS are encouraged to complete core courses early in their academic career, as they prepare students for the content in the elective courses. As a primarily upper-division minor, students should plan to complete the majority of elective courses during their junior and senior year.

For the current MLS Minor curriculum and degree requirements, please refer to the University of Utah General Catalog. Curriculum requirements are available under the Program Requirements tab, and sample degree plans are available under the Sample Degree Plan tab.

Students following requirements from a previous academic year should consult the Previous Catalogs page to locate their applicable catalog year.

To be admitted to the MLS minor program, students must have a minimum GPA of 2.5, be in good standing with their home department and the University, and meet with one of the MLS academic advisors to complete an application. Students should demonstrate strong academic performance in STEM coursework. Completed MLS minor applications will be reviewed by faculty in the MLS division to evaluate the applicant’s potential for successful program completion.
