The University of Utah Department of Pathology is pleased to welcome Dr. Salika Shakir back to the department. Dr. Shakir, who completed a fellowship in clinical microbiology with the department in 2017, joined the faculty in February 2020. She holds the rank of Assistant Professor (Clinical) in the Clinical Pathology Division.
Dr. Shakir received her BS from Bangalore University, located in Bangalore, India. She came to the United States in 2004 to attend the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center, where she earned a PhD. She also completed a postdoctoral fellowship at Oklahoma before coming to the University of Utah as a fellow. After completing her fellowship with the Department of Pathology, Dr. Shakir took a position as a research and development scientist at ARUP.
Dr. Shakir oversees STD testing and infectious diseases in women’s health. She has been involved in many COVID-related projects after receiving her faculty appointment; she looks forward to drawing on those experiences to contribute to the improvement of patient care and lab quality. Moving forward, Dr. Shakir is particularly excited to be participating in the Women’s Health Initiative, and hopes to focus on enhancing testing for STDs and women’s health testing.
Dr. Shakir and her family love Salt Lake City, and she feels it is a great place to raise a family. Dr. Shakir has two sons, and loves traveling as a family, cooking, and trying out new recipes for her family. She also enjoys hiking and biking. Dr. Shakir also volunteers in the local Muslim community, and in her spare time, contributes to helping refugees in the community.
