Clinical training is at Primary Children's Hospital, a 282-bed, freestanding children's hospital located adjacent to the University of Utah Hospital with a referral area that encompasses Utah, Idaho, Nevada, Wyoming, Montana, and Colorado.

Clinical Programs

Current clinical programs include: complex inflammatory bowel disease, nutritional and feeding disorders, intestinal rehabilitation, general hepatology & liver transplantation, motility and colorectal disorders, advanced endoscopy disease care and more.

The liver transplantation program has been in existence since 1996, averages 15-20 transplants per year, including live donation. Annual volumes include 3,500 endoscopic procedures, 10,000 outpatient visits, and 800 GI service admissions/inpatient consultations.

Ongoing research programs include:

  • Pediatric IBD – NIH
  • Pediatric Genomics – NIH
  • Childhood Liver Disease Research Network: NIH

Research training is focused on human subject research, systemic-based and clinical outcomes.

Potential projects include health outcomes, health policy, and epidemiology of pediatric gastrointestinal, nutritional, and hepatic disorders in infants, children, and adolescents.

Trainees are expected to design, perform, and report a mentored scholarly project during their training. Program graduates are expected to be able to interpret and critique the majority of human subject research literature in pediatric gastroenterology.
