Pediatric Neurology Boot Camp

PGY-3 residents start their neurology training with a 2-week bootcamp. This is full of meet - and - greets with their new team, didactic sessions on high-yield neurology topics, an introduction to EEG reading, stroke simulation workshops, shadowing on the wards with PGY-4 and PGY-5 residents, discussing mock pages, etc., all to prepare our PGY-3s to hit the ground running! Additionally, PGY-5 residents have the opportunity to revisit bootcamp in their final year of training and aid the new residents in their orientation.

Pediatric Neurology Grand Rounds Lecture Series

Grand Rounds take place every Wednesday at noon, featuring speakers covering a range of topics relevant to pediatric neurology practice. Regular series within Pediatric Neurology Grand Rounds include:

Morbidity & Mortality (M&M)
A system-based review of morbidity and mortality cases, focusing on identifying and reducing medical errors, fostering a culture of patient safety, and enhancing teamwork and communication

Journal Club
A review of selected articles from the latest and foundational pediatric and adult neurology literature

Case Conference
A collaborative discussion where faculty and residents present and examine unique or undiagnosed pediatric neurology cases
Didactic Lectures
Faculty and residents present reviews or clinical updates on a variety of pediatric neurology topics

Pediatric Neurology Noon Report

Residents or attendings present interesting cases and engage in a dialogue with the audience to work through the localization, differential diagnosis, work-up, and management as a group.

Pediatric Neurology Board Review

Residents meeting weekly to work through TrueLearn questions as a team to prepare clinically and for the board examination. PGY3-5 residents are provided a subscription to TrueLearn for board studying.

Genetics Curriculum

The Child Neurology Society has created a 16 module genetics curriculum. These modules are presented by faculty and genetic counselors as facilitators on a rotating basis so that all residents work through the modules over the course of their 3 years. Additionally, 3 introductory genetics sessions are held annually.

Pediatric Neurology Sign-Out Conference

This conference is an opportunity for the three inpatient teams (floor, ICU, and epilepsy monitoring) to review current patients, ensure continuity of care over the weekend, and discuss notable cases and clinical insights from the week.

Pediatric Neuroradiology Conference

Every week, Pediatric Neuroradiologists lead a teaching conference. The neurology ward team submits interesting inpatient cases, while both residents and attendings contribute outpatient cases. Colleagues from Genetics, Neurosurgery, and Pediatrics often participate to discuss unique cases.

Pediatric EEG Reading Conference

This weekly conference is led by epileptologists who review EEGs from the past week, covering both normal and abnormal findings.

Pediatric Epilepsy Management Conference

Each Monday morning, a multidisciplinary team—including pediatric epileptologists, neuroradiologists, neurosurgeons, and psychologists—reviews epilepsy surgery candidates. The conference covers long-term EEG monitoring results, imaging, neuropsychological assessments, and patient care contexts.

Each month the Pediatric Neuromuscular team discusses complex neuromuscular cases, including diagnosis and management strategies.

On the fourth Monday of each month, the pediatric neuromuscular team meets for a journal club to review current literature.

This monthly conference, held on the third Friday, brings together vascular neurology and endovascular neurosurgery to discuss pediatric stroke and other vascular cases.

Twice monthly, on the second and fourth Wednesdays, neuroimmunology specialists from both adult and pediatric divisions present cases and imaging related to neuroimmune disorders.

These weekly conferences feature didactic lectures across all neurology subspecialties, anatomy reviews, case discussions, and topics in education and communication. The sessions also incorporate the IDEAL curriculum, focusing on involvement, development, equal access, and leadership. Lectures are led by teaching faculty or residents.

Grand Rounds

Weekly departmental education meetings feature speakers from neurology and related subspecialties, including both local and national experts. Each month, a Morbidity and Mortality (M&M) conference is also included.

Neurovascular Case Conference

This conference provides an in-depth discussion of complex vascular cases with active imaging review by a neuroradiologist. It is attended by faculty, fellows, and residents from Vascular Neurology, Neurosurgery, and Neuroradiology.

Neuroimmunology Conference

Autoimmune and neuroimmunology cases presented and discussed with active imaging review. Attended by faculty of the Division of Neuroimmunology, faculty and fellows of the Department of Neuroradiology, and fellows of Autoimmune Neurology.

Subspecialty Conferences:

Cognitive case review: A specialized review attended by cognitive specialists and neuropsychologists.
Epilepsy: Weekly review of notable cases.
Epilepsy: A monthly discussion of cases being considered for epilepsy surgery.
Neuropathology: A monthly session focused on muscle and nerve biopsies, reviewed with neuromuscular and neuropathology specialists.
Neurocritical Care M&M: A monthly Morbidity and Mortality conference dedicated to neurocritical care cases.
Tumor Board: A weekly interdisciplinary meeting with specialists in neuro-oncology, neuroradiology, oncology, and neurosurgery.

Pediatrics Grand Rounds:

The Pediatric Grand Rounds weekly lecture series covers cutting-edge research and practical clinical applications, for hospital and community-based pediatricians, registered nurses, and other physicians and practitioners who care for children of any age.

Pediatric Research in Progress:

The Departmental Research in Progress (RIP) series highlights ongoing research efforts from across the Department. Speakers range from fellows and postdocs to senior faculty. RIP offers an opportunity to learn of collaborative opportunities and provide support and feedback for faculty and trainees.

Resident Meeting

Child neurology residents meet every month for lunch with the program director and assistant program director to discuss any program issues, answer questions, etc.

Regional and National Meetings

As clinical obligations allow, Child Neurology residents attend two regional conferences, Western Intermountain Neurological Organization and Brainstorm conference. Residents can be invited to present their research at these conferences or at the yearly Department of Neurology Baringer symposium. Residents are encouraged to submit their work to national conferences such as the Child Neurology Society annual meeting.
