CHILD NEUROLOGY RESIDENCY SCHEDULES
Continuity Clinic
Child neurology residents participate in a full-day continuity clinic each week during outpatient rotations only throughout all three years of their training. Additionally, if residents opt into the Pediatric Neurology Track their PGY-2 year they will do half of their continuity clinics in pediatric neurology (and the other half in general pediatrics). The primary goals of this continuity clinic are to establish long-term relationships with patients and their families and to gain expertise in managing pediatric neurology issues in an outpatient setting. Residents also have spots set aside for night float follow-up patients in clinics following a block of night float.
Clinic
- One full day per week on outpatient rotations only
- No more than six weeks between continuity clinics
- Two new patients and three follow-up patients per half-day
Call Schedule
Residents only take overnight and weekend call for pediatric neurology patients (no adult neurology call on nights and weekends).
We have a night float system for pediatric neurology call. Residents are on for a 2-week block with six nights/week on (Monday - Saturday nights) from 5:00 PM – 6:00 AM. Sunday night is cross-covered by a resident on an outpatient rotation. The Sunday night resident gets a post-call afternoon on Monday.
We use a hybrid model for night float. 5:00 PM - Midnight the resident is in-house and sees consults in the ED, on the floor, in the ICU and staffs with the attending over the phone. Midnight – 6:00 AM the resident takes call from home and returns to the hospital only for neurological emergencies requiring an in-person exam, such as strokes/suspected strokes.
A strength of our program is that residents are very involved in reviewing EEGs while on call. They always have the support of the on-call attending and epileptologist, but they get very comfortable interpreting EEGs themselves to make informed treatment decisions while on call.
Daytime call Monday - Sunday (6:00 AM – 5:00 PM) is covered by the child neurology residents on inpatient service.
