The Department of Psychiatry is highly respected and recognized world-wide for its Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) research programs. Lead by an exceptional team of interdisciplinary researchers, the mysteries of autism are slowly being understood. By studying genetics, biomarkers, epidemiology, and brain imaging we are learning more about what is happening biologically in children and adults who have autism. Our research is critical to understanding the causes of autism and, ultimately, to developing successful treatments for autism spectrum disorders (ASD). In addition to our own work, the department is part of a larger networks in the US and Europe. These include the Autism Sequence Consortium and the Autism Genome Project. Funded in part by the National Institutes of Health and the Autism Speaks Foundation, the project helps facilitate collaborative studies related to ASD. Research
