Mike Bird

Murray, UT

Mike is the Director of Laboratory and Allergy Services for the Department of Dermatology. He joined the University of Utah Health in 2015 with a background in healthcare operations, healthcare consulting, and healthcare policy. Mike is responsible for the operations and financial management of these service areas. He loves serving his community and works closely with many non-profits and organizations within out State. He serves as the Chair of the Board of Directors for Sabu Help International and Chairs the Salt Lake Community College Alumni Board. He enjoys spending his free time in the outdoors hiking, camping, and fishing with his wife Kim and their four amazing boys. 

Philicia Saucedo

Sandy, UT

Philicia Saucedo received her bachelor's degree in Biology at Concordia University, Irvine in 2011. After graduation, she started working in the University of Utah Dermatology where she volunteered for eight months until offered a position as Histology Technician. Over the next three years, she gained expertise in all roles within the Dermatopathology Laboratory, and in 2015, worked exclusively in Dermatology Mohs clinics, located throughout Salt Lake Valley. While working full time, she pursued her Master's of Science degree in Health Care Administration at Grand Canyon University and in July of 2020, was hired as Manager of the Immunodermatology Laboratory where she continued to learn unique and niche aspects of the laboratory. In February 2022, she was promoted to Operations Manager of Dermatopathology, Immunodermatology, and Mohs laboratories. 

For fun, Philicia loves to hike and go on adventures to National Parks with her husband, Frank. She enjoys cooking and reading. 

Julie Strong

Salt Lake City, UT

Julie started in pathology in 2010 as a medical transcriptionist with ARUP Laboratories. In 2012, she became Oncology Patient Coordinator for surgical and oncological breast cancer groups at Huntsman Cancer Hospital. In 2014, she joined the Dermatopathology Office team at the School of Medicine as Project Facilitator.  There she became acquainted with pathology in dermatology settings and gained experience both supervising and managing the Dermatopathology Office. In April of 2021, she transferred to the Dermatopathology Laboratory as Quality Improvement Specialist and was then promoted to Quality Manager of Dermatology Laboratory Services in early 2022. Julie enjoys meeting quality compliance challenges that arise within the Dermatopathology, Immunodermatology, and Mohs Laboratory settings, and strives to find opportunities for improvement. 

Outside of work, Julie is a textile/embroidery artist and enjoys time with her cats, gardening, and being in nature, especially the deserts and mountains of Utah. 

Jeremy Snook, PhD

Santa Fe, NM

Jeremy received his PhD in Immunology and Microbiology from the University of Utah and performed his post-doctoral training at the Huntsman Cancer Institute. The bulk of his scientific training has been centered around the field of immunology with focuses on immunologic memory and anti-tumor responses. Performing research and test development for Immunodermatology Laboratory is providing him with the opportunity to create new diagnostic testing platforms that will provide clinicians a more complete diagnostic portrait of patients suffering from serious autoimmune disorders.

John J. Zone, M.D.,  Kristin M. Leiferman, M.D., and Melanie K. Kuechle, M.D. are American Board of Dermatology Diplomats in Dermatology and Dermatological Immunology / Diagnostic and Laboratory Immunology. Mazdak A. Khalighi,  M.D. and Margaret M. Cocks, Ph.D., M.D. are American Board of Pathology Diplomats in Anatomic Pathology. Dr. Khalighi additionally has fellowship training and faculty experience in Renal Pathology/Immunopathology. Dr. Cocks additionally is an American Board of Pathology Diplomat in Clinical Pathology and is an American Board of Dermatology Diplomat in Dermatology and Dermatopathology. Drs. Khalighi and Cocks have had specialized, fellowship-equivalent training in laboratory immunodermatology by Drs. Zone and Leiferman.
