Residency Application

Thank you for your interest in the University of Utah Family Medicine Residency Program! All first-year residents are selected through the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP). All applications and supporting documents MUST BE SUBMITTED VIA ERAS (Electronic Residency Application System). We do not accept applications via email, fax, letter, or in person. All applications must be complete and received by October 7th. Once candidates have submitted a completed ERAS application, they will be considered as candidates for interviews. Interview season begins October 25th, 2024. Per the AAMC Interview Guidance for 2024-2025, all interviews will be virtual.

Our residency will be accepting program signals this application cycle, and will incorporate these as part of a holistic review of all applicants. In alignment with guidelines from the AAMC and ERAS, our program utilizes a whole-person approach that takes into consideration an applicant’s life experiences and attributes in addition to academics, and applicants are encouraged to share their unique backgrounds.

The University of Utah Family Medicine Residency Has Two Match Programs 

  1. Traditional residency program (9-10 residents a year)
    1. Standard 3-year full-spectrum Family Medicine residency training program
  2. The NIH funded StARR (Stimulating Access to Research in Residency) primary care research track (up to 1 resident per year)

The application requirements for each track and international applicants are listed below

 

Application Requirements for Both Match Programs 

  1. A completed ERAS application and accompanying materials, including
    • Personal statement
    • Dean’s letter [MSPE – Medical School Performance Evaluation]
    • Transcripts
    • Scores from USMLE Step 1, Step 2CK or COMLEX Level 1, Level 2 CE
    • Three to four letters of recommendation (one of these letters must be from a family physician)
    • Registration through the NRMP
    • Graduation from medical school within five years of the year of the current ERAS application. (For example: for the ERAS cycle opening in September of 2024, medical school graduates from June 2019 or more recent are eligible to apply.)
      • Exceptions to this graduation requirement are allowed for applicants who have been working as an employed clinical physician since graduation from medical school. This clinical work must have been continued to within two years of the opening of the ERAS portal in the year of application. (For example: an applicant applying to ERAS in September 2024 is eligible if they worked clinically up until at least September of 2022.) At least one of an applicant’s letters of recommendation must be from the applicant’s supervisor in this clinical setting.

Only application materials received through ERAS will be assessed in reviewing applicant files. Applicants will be selected for an interview following review of above documents and information.

 

Additional Requirements for StARR Research Track Applicants 

  • Apply and interview with both the traditional and StARR residency programs
  • Complete an additional StARR application as detailed on the StARR Website.
  • By the time of the appointment to the program, be a citizen or a non-citizen national of the United States or have been lawfully admitted for permanent residence
  • Provide evidence of prior research experience, progress and commitment to a clinical-investigator research career
  • Commitment to devote a minimum of 12 months to intensive research training during the 4 year StARR residency.

 

Additional Requirements for International Medical Graduate Applicants

To be eligible to apply, several minimum criteria must be documented in our files in addition to the application requirements listed above 

  • A valid ECFMG and clinical skills assessment certification
  • A copy of your green card, J-1 visa, or documentation of US citizenship (International medical graduate applicants are to cover all costs associated with J-1 visa application fees. The ECFMG is the visa sponsor, and the University of Utah serves as the institutional sponsor.)
  • Written evaluations demonstrating the successful completion of at least four (4) weeks of a family care sub-internship (acting internship) in an ACGME-accredited university setting in the United States OR completion of a preliminary residency year within the United States.
  • Letters of reference submitted through ERAS must include letters assessing an applicant’s performance during each of the international graduate applicant’s sub-internship/preliminary residency experiences.
  • Application materials must be completely submitted through ERAS.  No documents will be accepted outside of ERAS.
