The University of Utah Family Medicine Residency Program offers comprehensive and competitive benefits.

Vacation/Leave

Paid leave included three weeks (15 working days) of vacation annually and 5 days of personal/professional development time away annually. In the case of illness, one week (5 working days) of paid sick leave is permitted annually. Additional family leave, parental leave, and/or medical leave may be arranged as determined by GME and ABFM policy.

Retirement Plan Participation

Beginning July 1, 2024, automatic enrollment in a 401(a) defined contribution retirement plan with immediate vesting funded by the University and Affiliated Hospitals. The contribution for FY25 is 1%, FY26 is 2%, and FY27 is 3%. Future contributions will be determined by October 1, 2026.

Insurance 

  • Choice of several health insurance plans, including hospitalization coverage – premium costs are shared between the hospital and the resident for health coverage for the resident and family. Participation in Health Savings Accounts plans and Flexible Spending Accounts are available.
  • Group dental insurance for resident and family at a nominal charge per month.
  • Group term life insurance up to the salary amount but not to exceed $25,000 at no charge. Additional life insurance may be purchased by the resident.
  • Disability insurance for specialty-specific occupation with benefit equal to approximately 66.6% of monthly earnings up to $3,000/month (less benefits from other sources) and built-in cost-of-living rider. Basic policy paid by Hospital. Additional individual coverage may be purchased by the trainee.
  • Malpractice insurance is provided by the hospital for professional activities that are an approved part of the training program.

Medical Licensing and Certifications

The residency program will pay for costs of USMLE Step 3 or COMLEX Level 3, Utah medical license and controlled substance licenses, and required certifications and re-certifications during residency, including ACLS, NRP, PALS, ALSO (Advanced Life Support in Obstetrics).

Meal Funds

Funds are provided to residents on inpatient rotations to help cover meals while working.

Educational Allowance/CME

Reimbursement for conferences (including registration fees, and associated costs for travel, meals, and lodging), computers, books, or online educational materials are provided: 

  • R1s and R2s: $1,600 total
  • R3s: $1,600
  • Chief Residents: additional $2,500 in R3 year

Professional Memberships 

  • Membership is provided to the Utah Academy of Family Physicians and American Academy of Family Physicians.
  • Online memberships to UpToDate, DynaMed, Micromedex, and multiple other databases.

Other Benefits 

  • Funded overnight wellness retreats at the Deer Valley Resort in Park City during the R1 and R2 years.
