Letter from Dr. Kevin Shah, Program Director

Dear Fellowship Applicant,

Thank you for your interest in the Heart Failure and Cardiac Transplant fellowship program.

The Heart Failure and Cardiac Transplant Fellowship is under the auspices of the University of Utah School of Medicine and the U.T.A.H. Cardiac Transplant Program.  Our fellows rotate among three hospitals: University of Utah Health Science Center, George E. Wahlen Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center and Intermountain Medical Center.  The three hospitals serve as major referral centers for advanced heart failure and transplantation for the state of Utah, states from the surrounding intermountain region and veterans from around the country. The program has been in continuous operation for almost 35 years and more than 1,600 patients have received heart transplants (only a handful of worldwide have achieved this).

Our fellows gain experience in the medical management of advanced heart failure, heart transplantation, mechanical circulatory support and cardiogenic shock.  Other specialty clinics include pulmonary hypertension, hypertrophic cardiomyopathy and cardiac amyloidosis.  Fellows have protected time to gain experience in heart biopsies, invasive hemodynamics, device interrogation and interpretation.  Upon completion of the program, the fellows meet all criteria necessary for United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS) certification.  Fellows are encouraged to participate in heart failure and transplant research. Based on such work, our fellows have co-authored over 50 manuscripts and 50 abstracts during the last ten years.

Mostly importantly, training with our team will provide you the opportunity to tailor your training to your professional needs. We will work closely with our fellows to ensure your training with aligns well both with your interests as well as the needs for your next career step. You will leave here with the tools to become a true leader in the field.
