Utah Summer Training Academy for Rising Stars (USTARS)

The University of Utah School of Medicine Departments of Surgery, Anesthesiology, Otolaryngology, Neurosurgery, and Orthopedics proudly host the Utah Summer Training Academy for Rising Stars (USTARS) program. This six-week immersive experience is designed for medical students interested in academic surgery or anesthesiology and offers unparalleled exposure to clinical practice, research, and professional development.

Application Information

    To qualify, applicants must:

    • Demonstrate a commitment to expanding access to medical education and supporting the development of future physicians, particularly those from underserved backgrounds.
    • Be in good academic standing and have completed their first year (MS1) of medical school at an accredited allopathic or osteopathic institution in the U.S.
    • Have a strong interest in surgery or anesthesiology (or be curious to explore these fields).
    • Be able to travel to Salt Lake City and fully participate in all program activities for the entire six-week duration.

    Interested candidates should submit the following materials:

    • One-page personal statement describing:
      • Your unique background and experiences.
      • How the USTARS program aligns with your academic and career goals.
      • Your declared track (Anesthesiology or Surgery) and your specific interest in that field.
    • Current Curriculum Vitae (CV)
    • Letter of good academic standing from your Dean of Academic Affairs.

    About the Program

    Overview

    USTARS is structured around:

    • Professional identity development
    • Perioperative and intraoperative skills training
    • Clinical exposure across surgical and anesthesia services
    • Research principles and academic career preparation

    The program offers two distinct pathways, allowing participants to specialize in either Surgery or Anesthesiology based on their declared interest. 

    Two candidates will be selected for the anesthesiology track.
