Training Locations
Residents in our program will train at public, private, and government facilities, preparing them for a wide variety of careers after graduation. We also have off-site training at various clinics throughout the Salt Lake Valley and abroad.
University Hospital
University Hospital is a 535-bed tertiary and primary care center situated at the foot of the Wasatch Mountains in Salt Lake City, and averages 26,000 inpatient admits per year. The hospital is a major referral center for complex and often unusual medical cases from throughout the Intermountain West. It also maintains a large primary care base supplied from the Division of General Internal Medicine and the ten satellite clinics of the University of Utah Health Network. All patients have private rooms with fantastic views of the Salt Lake Valley and surrounding mountains.
Resident rotations at the University Hospital include general medicine ward teams and subspecialty ward teams, including pulmonary, general cardiology, chronic heart failure. Residents also gain experience in the Medical Intensive Care Unit, Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit, and the Emergency Room, a Level 1 trauma center. Residents will also have experiences in subspecialty consults and outpatient clinics. All rotations are staffed by University of Utah faculty and ample support services.
The Huntsman Cancer Institute
The Huntsman Cancer Institute combines groundbreaking research and state-of-the art patient care with the offering of hope and support for cancer patients and their families. Research scientists, medical professionals, and cancer educators are working together to understand cancer, improve treatments, and help patients fight their disease.
Salt Lake City has become one of the foremost regions in the world for genetic and medical research due to its unique resource of large and close families with detailed genealogical records living in a relatively small area. These families have provided physicians and researchers at Huntsman Cancer Institute with the tools they need to investigate the genetic pathways of cancer and to create new ways to prevent, diagnose, treat, and cure cancer.
The Huntsman Cancer Institute includes 100 inpatient beds. We support two inpatient teaching services at the Hunstman, one specializing in oncology and one in hematology. Residents also rotate through outpatient clinics at the Huntsman.
Veterans Affairs Medical Center
The George E. Wahlen Dept. of Veterans Affairs Medical Center (VAMC) is a 121 bed tertiary and primary care medical center located about a mile south of University Hospital. It is the major tertiary referral center for the Department of Veterans Affairs for a five-state region and has a diverse inpatient and outpatient population.
The VAMC provides an outstanding opportunity for residents to have graded responsibility and the necessary autonomy to develop individual responsibility for patient management. Resident experiences include general medicine wards, MICU, emergency care, general medicine ambulatory care, and multiple outpatient subspecialty clinics.
Intermountain Medical Center
Intermountain Medical Center (IMC) is Intermountain Healthcare’s flagship hospital. It is built on a 100-acre campus that is centrally located in the Salt Lake Valley. The three components of IMC's mission—the science of medicine, the spirit of caring, and the miracle of healing—are delivered in state-of-the-art facilities surrounded by an environment of beauty.
The campus serves as home base for Intermountain Life Flight and other major programs such as organ transplantation, artificial heart research, and trauma care. IMC is the largest hospital in the Intermountain West and is a major adult referral center for six surrounding states and more than 75 regional health care institutions.
Resident rotations at IMC include general medicine ward teams, medicine consults, STICU, and the Emergency Room. Residents also have the opportunity to work with expert subspecialists at IMC and community clinics.
IMC has extraordinary support personnel and associated resources and is an international leader in using computers to improve health care. Featured in the NEJM (338(4);1998), the computerized medical records system was first started in the 1950’s and provides unmatched patient information to assist in both clinical and research capacities.
Fourth Street Clinic
The Fourth Street Clinic serves over 5,000 homeless men, women, and children in Salt Lake City every year, providing comprehensive primary care services. Residents in our program have an opportunity to rotate at this amazing asset to our community during outpatient clinic weeks and during elective time.
