Shadowing

The Department of Orthopaedics is committed to assisting those interested in shadowing our providers. We will make every attempt to accommodate requests for those who already have a sponsor, but as we need to prioritize trainees and University of Utah MD students, we cannot guarantee placement.

Shadowing Requirements

Available Dates: November – April

UU MD Students: Complete the UHealth Shadow Request Form only

All other students/employees:

  • Must be 18 years or older to apply
  • Must include cover letter
  • Must include one-page resume or CV
  • Must submit proof of immunizations after approval

Shadowing Expectations

  • The total number of hours may not exceed 12 hours per year.
  • You will be strictly limited to observing, and not participating in, patient care.
  • When you are present during care, the patient must be notified in advance and can object. When a patient consents, it must be documented in the patient’s chart.
  • Any protected health information (PHI) shared or communicated must be the minimum amount necessary to facilitate appropriate care delivery.
  • You must not retain any written or electronic PHI (notes or photocopies) of a patient’s care.
  • Do not disclose any PHI observed or heard during patient care.
