Announcing New SPARC Leadership

We are thrilled to announce the new leadership of the Surgical Population Analysis Research Core (SPARC), a cornerstone initiative dedicated to advancing surgical care through data-driven research. Effective January 1, 2024, Marta McCrum, MD, and Brock O’Neil, MD, will step into the role of co-directors, bringing their wealth of expertise and commitment to advancing SPARC’s mission.

Dr. McCrum, associate professor in the Division of General Surgery, is renowned for her research focusing on access and disparities in emergency general surgery services, quality improvement, and health systems research. Dr. O’Neil, associate professor in the Division of Urology, has a well-established record in researching low-value care, healthcare delivery innovation, and disparities in urologic oncology care.

Together, as co-directors, their vision for SPARC includes:

  1. Equitable Access to SPARC Resources: Ensuring surgery faculty have fair and timely access to SPARC's wealth of resources and expertise.
  2. Education in Data Methods: Providing ongoing education in methodologies and best practices related to large data, empowering faculty to harness the full potential of available datasets.
  3. Expansion of External Funding: Working towards enlarging the department’s portfolio of externally funded large data grants, fostering continued growth and impact.

During their transition into this leadership role, Drs. McCrum and O’Neil plan to conduct a comprehensive needs assessment among faculty in the Department of Surgery. Your engagement in this process is crucial, and we encourage everyone to actively participate and share insights as SPARC continues to evolve.

Join us in congratulating Drs. Marta McCrum and Brock O’Neil on their new roles at SPARC. We are confident that under their guidance, SPARC will continue to thrive as a vital hub for groundbreaking research in surgical population analysis
