Dr. Jeremiah Alt Named Vice Chair of DEI

Announcement from Interim Department Chair, Dr. Rob Glasgow:

The Department of Surgery’s vision is to build and nurture a culture of inclusion that respects the humanity of ALL peoples. As surgical leaders within our community, we feel responsible for increasing diversity and inclusion both internal and external to our Department. The Department of Surgery is committed to creating a diverse and inclusive climate for ALL faculty and trainees. We believe that diversity in our Department builds a more creative, productive, capable and innovative group that will lead to improvements in education, research, innovation and clinical care.

In support of the this effort, the Department of Surgery has instituted an inaugural Vice Chair Position for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI). We are excited to have Jeremiah Alt MD, PhD from the Division of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery serve as the inaugural Vice Chair for DEI. Dr. Alt’s personal experience, passion, and leadership abilities make him ideally suited for this role. He will help us build upon existing DEI efforts and successes across the Department’s clinical, research and educational enterprises while formulating a clear planned vision for the Department. The inaugural Vice Chair for DEI will work in coordination with the Department’s Vice Chairs, Division Chiefs, and Program Directors from the Department of Surgery and The Office of the Associate Vice President for DEI to actively promote DEI in our department and institution. The Department of Surgery is excited to be a leader in DEI.

Thank you Dr. Alt for agreeing to serve in this role and thank you to all of those in our Department community for your ongoing engagement in this important area. We are looking forward to working with you all in building a diverse, equitable and inclusive culture that will carry us forward.
