Apply for Geriatrics Fellowship

Eligibility
For application to the Geriatric Fellowship program, the applicant should be either:
- A graduate of a U.S. or Canadian medical school accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME), or
- A graduate of a college of osteopathic medicine in the U.S., which is accredited by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA), or
- A graduate of a medical school outside of the U.S. who has completed a residency in internal medicine or family medicine in a ACGME accredited U.S. program and who has a full and unrestricted license to practice medicine in a U.S. licensing jurisdiction.
Each applicant must also have passed USMLE parts I, II, and III or the COMLEX parts I, II, and III prior to the time they will begin training.
Candidates for Fellowship must be board eligible in Internal Medicine or Family Practice.
All incoming fellows are required to be licensed to practice medicine in Utah by the time they start their training at the University of Utah.

Application
All applications are processed through the Electronic Residency Application System (ERAS).
Required documentation for program application is uploaded to the ERAS system by the applicant and includes:
- Fully completed Fellowship Application form
- Minimum of two letters of recommendation
- Curriculum Vitae and Personal Statement
- USMLE scores parts I, II, and III or the COMLEX scores parts I, II, and III
Additional documentation required from international medical graduates:
- Copy of green card, visa (J-1) or documentation of U.S. citizenship
- Valid ECFMG certificate with Clinical Skills Assessment certification
- Evidence of previous training in the United States or Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons or the College of Family Physicians of Canada
Selection
The Program Director and a fellowship selection committee will review applications. Criteria as set forth by the ACGME Program Requirements, the Resident Recruitment Committee, and the University of Utah School of Medicine will be applied in the review process.
In screening applicants, reviewers consider:
- The quality of letters of recommendation
- The quality of the applicant’s medical school and residency training
- The applicant's interest in practicing Geriatric Medicine
Decision
Following the interview process, a rank order list will be submitted to the NRMP. Specific criteria for rank order will be as follows:
- The quality of letters of recommendation
- The quality of Applicant’s medical school and residency training
- The applicant's interest in practicing Geriatric Medicine
- Interview evaluation
