The scientific focus of our division centers on the study of blood and bone marrow in both health and disease. Our physicians provide expert care for patients with blood cancers - including leukemias and lymphomas - as well as clotting disorders such as hemophilia and conditions related to iron metabolism, including hemochromatosis. Building on the legacy of Dr. Maxwell Wintrobe, a pioneering figure in hematology and founding leader of the University of Utah School of Medicine, our division is proud to uphold a long-standing tradition of excellence in research, clinical care and education.

80 Years of Clinical Hematology
2022 is the 80th anniversary of the publication of the first hematology textbook - Clinical Hematology, by Dr. Maxwell M. Wintrobe. The first 6 editions of the textbook (1942-1967) were written entirely by Dr. Wintrobe. Starting with the 7th edition in 1974, additional editors were recruited. The book’s name was changed to Wintrobe’s Clinical Hematology with the 9th edition in 1993. A total of 14 editions have been published to date. Dr. Wintrobe died in 1986. The early editions of Clinical Hematology did much to establish hematology as a subspeciality of internal medicine. The figure shows all editions of the textbook (shown chronologically left to right) published since 1942 assembled by the authors, two of whom (JHW, PFB) were trained by and worked with Dr. Wintrobe.
