Welcome to the University of Utah Hematology & Medical Oncology Fellowship Program
Welcome to the University of Utah Hematology & Medical Oncology Fellowship Program and thank you for your interest in our program! Our mission is to produce leaders in the field of hematology and oncology. This means training the most clinically competent hematologists and oncologists with the goal of producing leaders in basic science research, clinical research and clinical care. Our graduates of the last 10 years are almost split down the middle with half having gone onto academic careers and half into private practice.
We offer a three year, dual board eligibility curriculum for the majority of our fellows. We have also had fellows that choose to stay for more basic science research time (typically a year) as well as fellows who choose a clinically heavy, 2 year, single board eligibility fellowship.
In most recent years we have had tremendous growth in the volume of patients seen and the number of faculty involved in our program. Our faculty are recognized experts in oncology, benign and malignant hematology whom provide many and varied opportunities for fellows to participate in laboratory, translational, and clinical research, including phase I clinical trials, investigator-initiated trials, and quality improvement research.
Our primary site is the Huntsman Cancer Institute, an NCI-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center that serves as the primary cancer center of the Mountain West region. Adjacent to University of Utah Hospital, both medical centers sit in the foothills of the spectacular Wasatch Front Mountains, overlooking the Salt Lake valley. Salt Lake City offers a wide variety of cultural activities, including the new, nationally recognized Utah Natural History Museum and Ballet West and endless outdoor activities including world class skiing, snowboarding, bike riding, hiking, camping, and river sports. Our fellows also rotate and have continuity clinics at the George E. Wahlen Veterans Affairs Medical Center, located next to the University of Utah Health center. The majority of our second and third year fellows have continuity clinics at the VAMC where they see an array of pathology and have an outstanding balance of autonomy and oversight.
We will match 6 fellows per year, for a full complement average of 18 fellows. We are looking for self-motivated, compassionate, intellectually curious skilled clinicians that bring an array of interests and talents.
If you have specific questions please feel free to reach out to me directly. I think you will find Salt Lake City and the Huntsman an outstanding environment for training.
