How to Apply
Each year, the Triple Board Residency Program offers three PGY-1 positions. All positions are filled through the National Resident Matching Program and applications are accepted only through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS)®, which transmits residency applications, letters of recommendation, dean's letters, transcripts, and other supporting credentials to residency program directors. The program will be using Thalamus this year for application review and interview scheduling.
The University of Utah will join the rest of the Triple Board Residency Programs in beginning to offer interviews in a rolling fashion on October 14, 2025, at 4 pm Eastern Time. Only the amount of available interview slots will be extended. Applicants will be expected to schedule their interview or decline their interview within 3 business days. Once all available interview slots are filled, wait list invitations will be extended. Applicants who will not be considered for interviews or wait list spots will be notified by 12/15/2025.
Required application materials to be submitted to ERAS include:
- ERAS online application form
- Personal Statement (please limit to one page). Applicants are encouraged to write a triple board-specific personal statement.
- Dean's letter
- Medical school transcript
- Three letters of recommendation
- Curriculum vitae
- USMLE or COMLEX score reports
- ECFMG certificate, if applicable
The University of Utah School of Medicine does not discriminate on the basis of sex, race, age, religion, color, national origin, disability or veteran's status.
Application Review
The Triple Board Selection Committee holistically reviews every application, starting with personal statements to solicit interest in and understanding of triple board training, which should include ultimate career goals. The committee looks at clinical, volunteer, and/or research activities and experiences that demonstrate an understanding of the patient population with which triple board physicians work. The committee looks for life experiences that demonstrate distance traveled or obstacles overcome. Clinical/clerkship experiences are reviewed in the MSPE, looking for competence in psychiatric and pediatric care. A pediatric Sub-Internship is highly recommended. An experience in child and adolescent psychiatry is also highly recommended. MSPE and letters of recommendation are reviewed to glean future performance as a resident and to look for indicators of professionalism and growth mindset. Finally, USMLE/COMLEX reports are reviewed to see if Step 1 has been passed. If Step 1 was not passed on the first try, the selection committee will verify that Step 2 has been passed before extending an interview. No minimum Step/COMLEX scores are required to be considered for interviews.
International Medical Graduate Requirements
Applications will only be accepted through ERAS. International Medical Graduates should apply through the ECFMG office - see instructions at www.aamc.org or contact the ECFMG office for further information.
In general, most of the international medical graduates we interview meet the following requirements:
- Green card, J-1 visa (not sponsored) or documentation of US citizenship
- Valid ECFMG certificate with clinical skills assessment certification
- Evidence of a minimum of one year of clinical experience in the United States including two letters of recommendation from academic physicians with whom you have worked
Interview Process
We conduct two-day interviews virtually: Mondays with Adult and Child Psychiatry and Tuesdays with Pediatrics. Interviews are scheduled from November 1 through mid-January.
For any additional questions about the application or interview process, please contact the Program Manager via email.
Medical Student Elective (Triple Board)
A triple board elective rotation is not required but is encouraged as a way for interested medical students to get a better idea of the scope of triple board training in Utah. The rotation in Utah highlights the variety of training sites that triple board residents clinically rotate during training. Medical students are often not with the same attending longitudinally. If students are interested in letters of recommendation, a month-long child psychiatry or pediatric consult-liaison rotation through the University of Utah may be a better fit.
Rotations are scheduled through the VSLO system. Applications for visiting rotations should include a letter of interest in triple board specifically and an updated CV. For more information about a medical student elective, contact the Medical Student Program Manager, Lindsay.Clark@hsc.utah.edu.
