The Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery Integrated Residency Program is a 6 Year training program which includes 2 Years of Professional Development. The program was approved for initial accreditation on December 13, 2019. Interviews were completed in February 2020 and we matched our first resident, Joe Heiler, in March 2021.
Mission Statement:
The University of Utah Cardiothoracic surgery residency program provides comprehensive education to every Cardiothoracic trainee and shape the future of Cardiothoracic surgical education through innovation and discovery.
Program Aims:
- Deliver a structured approach to evaluating the competency of all CT Surgery Trainees
- Provide clinical learning environments characterized by excellence in clinical care, safety and professionalism
- Active participation by faculty who are motivated to perform at the highest level of competency and professionalism to deliver the best in patient care and the best in cardiothoracic surgical education
- Teaching of the fundamentals in Cardiothoracic Surgery through intentional, individualized professional development of CT trainees to help them achieve specialty specific proficiency prior to graduation
- Preparing residents and fellows to become Attendings who place the needs and well-being of patients first
