On Friday, October 22, 2021, the Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery hosted an event in celebration of the School of Perfusion’s Simulation Lab Support Fund. The fund was established in memory of Don Kimble, a 1973 University of Utah graduate who was a pioneer in extracorporeal circulation and cardiac surgery perfusion. Don impacted many perfusionists, anesthesiologists, and surgeons. Given his passion for education, we know how excited he would be to see the development of the Perfusion School. Don passed in 2011, but his legacy is clear as we dedicate the Simulation Laboratory in his honor.
Don’s wife Paula, who has been active in the development of the Perfusion School since its inception, has worked tirelessly to help us create what we hope will be one of the most exceptional training centers in the country. A large donation from Paula and the rest of the Kimble family allowed for the establishment of the Simulation Laboratory, which gives students the unique opportunity to run full simulated cases. Paula has even come to observe these and interact with the students! In addition, Drs. Smego and Pereira will use the Simulation Lab for additional training for our Fellows.
The Celebration included remarks from both Dr. Selzman, Chief of the Division, and Kirk Bingham, Director of Graduate Studies in the Perfusion School. Attendees were also able to tour the Simulation Lab, which is currently located below the Eccles Library. When the new School of Medicine is built, the Lab will transition there.
