Thomas K. Varghese, Jr., MD, MS, FACS has accepted the role of Associate Chief Medical Quality Officer at Huntsman Cancer Institute. Dr. Varghese will also continue to serve as HCI's Chief Value Officer under Dr. Tom Miller's leadership. 

In the last few years, Dr. Varghese has led HCI's partnership with Flatiron Health and brought many stakeholders to the table to address quality initiatives and goals. Dr. Varghese represents the compassionate culture of HCI in his sincere interactions from the bedside to the conference room with patients, faculty, and staff. His data-driven approach to improving the quality of cancer care delivery is shared with focus and passion. 

Dr. Varghese is a Professor of Surgery and Head of the Section of General Thoracic Surgery. He holds national leadership positions in the Society of Thoracic Surgeons, the Thoracic Surgery Directors Association, the Society of University Surgeons, and the American College of Surgeons.  He helped create the ACS Strong for Surgery program and is a health services researcher with NCI R01 funding that is focused on testing the impact of a Precision Exercise Prescription (PEP) for patients undergoing elective lung cancer surgery.  Dr. Varghese is also committed to training the next generation, having served as Program Director for the Cardiothoracic Fellowship from 2016 to 2021.

Dr. Varghese also received his EMBA from the Eccles School of Business at the University of Utah earlier this year.
