The American Medical Association (AMA) will host the first ever Graduate Medical Education (GME) Innovations Summit. The Summit, scheduled for October 5-6, 2020 and originally taking place in Sacramento, CA, will now be held virtually due to COVID-19 concerns. This national conference will highlight keynote presentations, interactive panel discussions, and an innovations challenge all aimed at uniting leaders in medical education around the topic of utilizing innovative ideas in education to transform GME and meet the needs of the nation’s healthcare system. In anticipation of the GME Innovations Summit, Dr. Kirstyn E. Brownson, a Breast Surgical Oncologist at Huntsman Cancer Institute and Assistant Professor of Surgery at the University of Utah, submitted a proposal titled “Resident Autonomy in the Cadaver Lab.” Her concept is to facilitate surgical resident operative autonomy by having junior surgical residents teach the steps of several surgical procedures to pre-clinical medical students during their cadaveric dissection lab. This proposal was one of 25 selected from over 120 ideas from around the country.  “Resident Autonomy in the Cadaver Lab” will be refined during a workshop at the GME Innovations Summit and ultimately could be considered for AMA seed funding to support the development of this educational initiative. For more information about the
