2023 AMERICAN BURN ASSOCIATION'S ANNUAL BURN CONFERENCE
The Department of Surgery had a strong presence at the 2023 American Burn Association’s Annual Burn Conference in Dallas, TX, May 16-19 with 24 members participating at all levels from chairing committees, teaching ABLS, presenting posters and podium presentations, directing courses and learning. Congratulations to PGY4 Aislinn Lewis, MD for winning “Best in Category” for her poster on necrotizing soft tissue infections. In addition to conference participation, Lois Remington, RN has been part of the lead national nursing group creating structured certification for the Burn specific ICU RN and Callie Thompson, MD, FACS has re-written and updated the entire course single-handedly as chair of the Advanced Burn Life Support Committee.
U-CARS (UTAH CARDIAC RECOVERY SYMPOSIUM)
The University of Utah, Department of Surgery's 11th Annual U-CARS (Utah Cardiac Recovery) Symposium was hosted in-person on March 16-17 with over 500 registrants from around the world.
This event featured thought leaders and insightful speakers who discussed ground-breaking research in the field of cardiac recovery. The discussions span clinical, translational and basic sciences.
RUMEL RESEARCH SYMPOSIUM
The fourth annual Rumel Research Symposium was held on campus on May 23rd, 2023. The symposium is named after Dr. William “Ray” Rumel, who was the first program director of the Thoracic Surgery Fellowship. The purpose of the symposium is to highlight and celebrate the research accomplishments of our trainees and faculty, and to foster innovation and collaboration within the Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery. This year, a total of 12 abstracts were presented during the event. The Perfusion students, Cardiothoracic Surgery fellows and CT Surgery attendings presented completed or ongoing research projects. Dr. Glotzbach’s presented abstract “Similar Aortic Tissue Transcriptional Profiles in Aneurysms with Bicuspid and Trileaflet Aortic Valves” has been accepted as a manuscript for publication on Circulation later this year.
AMERICAN TRANSPLANT CONGRESS
Talia Baker, MD, Chief, Division of Transplant & Hepatobiliary Services will be attending the American Transplant Congress (ATC) in June to share her experience in Liver Transplant Oncology in collaboration with Huntsman Cancer Institute.
WESTERN THORACIC SURGICAL ASSOCIATION
Sara Pereira, MD, (CT Surgery) was awarded the 2022 Donald B. Doty Award for the proposal titled “Simulated Coronary Artery Anastomosis Warm-up Study”. Dr. Pereira will be presenting a brief oral report at the 2023 Western Thoracic Surgical Association (WTSA) Annual Meeting in June 2023.
