Fellowship Eligibility

To be eligible for the Pediatric Hematology/Oncology Fellowship at the University of Utah School of Medicine (Primary Children's Hospital), an applicant must:

  • Be a graduate of a US or Canadian medical school accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) --OR--
  • Be a graduate of a college of osteopathic medicine in the United States accredited by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA) --OR--
  • Be a graduate of a medical school outside the United Sates who meets one or more of the following qualifications:
    • Has a currently valid ECFMG certificate, --OR--
    • Has a full and unrestricted license to practice medicine in a US-licensing jurisdiction

In addition, applicants must:

  • Satisfactorily complete a pediatric residency program in North America
  • Pass parts 1, 2, and 3 of USMLE --OR-- COMLEX step 1 and 2
  • Be board eligible in pediatrics before starting training

Application Process

We require:

  • Curriculum vitae
  • Personal statement
  • Three letters of recommendation including a letter from current program director for application

All applications are processed through the Electronic Resident Application System (ERAS).

International Medical Graduates must include the following materials in addition to the above requirements:

  • Copy of green card
  • J-1 visa (no other visa will be accepted - no exceptions) or documentation of U.S. citizenship
  • Valid ECFMG certificate
  • Evidence of previous training in the United Sates (if applicable)

Selection Criteria

Candidates for this program are selected based on their preparedness, ability, academic credentials, communication skills, and personal qualities such as motivation and integrity. Preference is given to candidates who demonstrate interest or achievement in clinical or basic science research.

Application materials are reviewed via criteria set forth by the ACGME Program Requirements, the Resident Recruitment Committee, and this institution. The division members review applicants who meet the criteria.

Interview Process

Applicants are invited (if appropriate) for an interview based on the quality of application and academic credentials. Applicants interview with members of the faculty, the program director, and the division head whenever possible.

All applicants also meet with current hematology/oncology fellows and may review potential research opportunities.

Following the interview process, faculty participating in the interview process will submit their recommendations to the program director. The fellowship selection committee will tally recommendations and make final decisions.

Criteria for selection includes:

  • Quality of letters of recommendation
  • Quality of applicant's medical school and residency training
  • Interview evaluation
  • Potential for an academic career

Selected applicants will be admitted, pending receipt and review of USMLE Step 3 scores.

We are currently accepting two fellows per year.
