Dr. Paul Clayton Appointed as Emeritus Professor

Scott Narus

Congratulations to Dr. Scott Narus, Assistant Professor in the Department of Biomedical Informatics (BMI), University of Utah, Salt Lake City, Utah for receiving the Reed M. Gardner Award for Faculty Excellence. The award was presented to Dr. Narus in a special seminar held on May 6, 2011. The award was created by students to acknowledge the achievements of faculty members in the areas of teaching, mentoring, and service to the department.

Anusha Muthukutty, the chair of the selection committee states: "Dr. Narus deserves this award for many reasons, he is always available to students for consultation, leads an interactive class room and he is an excellent mentor. He is on 17 graduate students committees and many students have benefitted in terms of financial assistance and research direction from his several large projects."

Dr. Narus joined the department in July 2000 and has over 20 years’ experience in systems development, recently serving as the chief software architect for the in-house development of Intermountain Healthcare’s enterprise clinical information system. While at Intermountain, he also assisted with development and operational issues associated with the enterprise master patient index. Currently he is the director of informatics infrastructure development for the Biomedical Informatics Core of the University of Utah’s Clinical and Translational Science Award (NCRR). Dr. Narus is the Principle Investigator of an NIH grant to develop a statewide Master Person Index, working with Intermountain Healthcare, UDOH and UHIN.
