The University of Utah received a $95,000 award from National Science Foundation to conduct workshop entitled, “Patient Empowerment: A Transdisciplinary Informatics-based Approach.” The PI for the project, Leslie Lenert MD of the Department of Medicine and Biomedical Informatics described the project as, “a unique opportunity to bring together clinicians, engineers, computer scientists, and psychologists to identify critical problems health systems that keep health systems from being patient centric. The program will address problems spanning micro (intrapersonal), meso (within healthcare relationships), and macrosystem (across the health system) levels including the problems poised by non-linear adaptive system structure of healthcare. In this context, the workshop will explore the interfaces between medicine, psychology, sociology, decision sciences, economics, information technology, and patient empowerment and will identify gaps in theory and implementation of strategies for use of information technology in patient empowerment that require further research by the NSF and other agencies. The workshop will be conducted at the Stein Erikson Lodge in Park City November 30 to December 2nd.
