Abstract
This presentation will describe the use of applied informatics to automate the inpatient quality measurement for patients with heart failure. Heart failure is the number one reason for discharge of veterans treated within the VA health care system. In addition, approximately 5.8 million people in the general population of the United States have experienced heart failure. Each year 670,000 people are diagnosed for the first time. In 2010, heart failure cost the United States $39.2 billion; these costs were associated with health care services, medications, and lost productivity of workers with heart failure. Informatics tools have been developed that extract key clinical concepts from free-text documents as part of an overall effort to automate quality measurement and to improve quality of care for patients with heart failure. The accuracy of the informatics tools, using a comparison reference standard developed through human review, will be discussed. A demonstration of the VA virtual development environment and the software tools used in this research will be provided using fake echocardiogram text reports.
Bio
Jennifer Garvin, PhD, MBA, is an Assistant Professor in Epidemiology at the University of Utah School of Medicine and is a Research Health Scientist at the Salt Lake City VA Informatics Decision Enhancement and Surveillance (IDEAS) Center. Dr. Garvin completed her postdoctoral fellowship in Medical Informatics at the Center for Health Equity Research and Promotion (CHERP) at the Philadelphia VA Medical Center. Dr. Garvin has over 25 years of experience working in applied informatics. She specializes in applied informatics with emphasis in automation of quality measurement and in standards and terminologies. She has a growing expertise in Implementation Science and is a Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA), Certified Professional in Healthcare Quality (CPHQ), Certified Coding Specialist (CCS), Certified Tumor Registrar (CTR), and a Fellow of the American Health Information Management Association (FAHIMA).
