Abstract

Poison Control Centers (PCC) play an important role in the field of telemedicine. In 2009, PCCs handled about 2.5million human poison exposure calls and received 1.7million calls requesting information about poisons. The proposed research project focusses on integration of text/instant messaging communication with the public into PCC workflow. The major goals of the project include a detailed study of the present telephone-based workflow of PCCs and design of a new workflow integrating text/instant messaging. The project will gather preliminary data describing the effects of text/instant messaging communication on average time of call, SPI communication and data quality in simulated poisoning communication scenarios.
