We are pleased to announce that Dr. Jennifer Garvin joined the Department of Biomedical Informatics on August 15, 2012 as an Associate Professor. Prior to Garvin accepting a faculty position with BMI, she was an adjunct professor in the department. She is also currently a VA Salt Lake City Health Care System (SLCVAHCS) Geriatric Research Education and Clinical Center Affiliated Faculty, and a Core Research Investigator at the SLCVAHCS Informatics Decision Enhancement and Surveillance (IDEAS) Research Center.
Dr. Garvin earned her PhD in Health Studies from the Department of Public Health at Temple University in Philadelphia, PA. Her postdoctoral training in Medical Informatics occurred at the Center for health Equity Research and Promotion (CHERP) sponsored by the Department of Veteran Affairs (VA) at the Philadelphia VA Medical Center (PVAMC) in association with the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine (SOM). She is also a Health Information Management (HIM) professional with 28 years of experience in HIM and applied Informatics. Her interests are in the areas of automation of health care quality measurement using standards and informatics tools, such as natural language processing tools, and in health care standards terminologies and classifications, improving the efficiency and quality of health care, secondary use of electronic health record data in clinical and health services research, use of techniques associated with Implementation Science to improve health care, and improving care of Veterans.
