Homer R. Warner, M.D., the founding chair of the U’s Department of Biomedical Informatics, died November 30, 2012 after a brief illness. Dr. Warner was a pioneer in the field of biomedical informatics and helped usher in the modern era of using computers in medicine. His legacy is felt not only in medical technology, but also in the hundreds of students he taught and mentored throughout his career in his labs and classrooms. Dr. Warner founded and became the first chair in the Department of Biomedical Informatics in the School of Medicine, which existed under various names since 1972. Dr. Warner’s legacy of excellence and innovation has persisted and the department remains a leader in informatics research, training and implementation. He will be greatly missed.
