Congratulations to John F. Hurdle, MD, PhD on his retirement and designation as Professor Emeritus of the Department of Biomedical Informatics as of July 1, 2023.
Dr. Hurdle joined DBMI as an adjunct faculty member in 2002 and later joined as an Associate Professor (Tenure) in 2006. He received full tenure in 2009 and advanced to a tenured Professor in 2015. During his time in DBMI, he served as the principal investigator of the NLM T15 Training Grant from 2011-2016 as well as served on various committees in the department. He also created DBMI’s first non-thesis MS and health informatics certificate program as well as mentored 49 graduate students.
We are grateful for his years of service to not only our department, but to the scientific community at large. Dr. Hurdle’s contributions to science, education, and administration have been integral to the success of our department these past two decades. He brought clinical NLP to the forefront of education and research during its infancy as well as played a key role in advancing the university’s research infrastructure and influencing future informaticists.
Thank you to everyone that joined us on Wednesday, August 16th at the Alumni House to celebrate John’s Retirement. We wish him the best on this next chapter!
