Primary Care Internal Medicine Residency Track
Welcome to the University of Utah Primary Care Internal Medicine Residency Track!
The University of Utah Primary Care Internal Medicine Program is dedicated to cultivating and developing leaders in primary care who deliver equitable, patient-centered and evidence-based care for all patients. We are committed to academic innovation and excellence through scholarship, advocacy and leadership within a strong Utah primary care community.
Our three-year program is fully integrated into the larger Department of Internal Medicine residency program. The University of Utah IM residency program has an exceptional educational infrastructure and an excellent reputation since it was first accredited in 1957. Due to growing demand for Internal Medicine primary care physicians and a commitment to enhancing primary care training, we have expanded our primary care curriculum into a primary care residency program.
In addition to enhanced primary care training, primary care residents will work at all of the inpatient sites. They will have robust inpatient and critical care experiences with broad patient populations and training cultures. After starting intern year with a month-long Primary Care Bootcamp, the primary care curriculum will include four three-month primary care immersion blocks intermixed with inpatient months during the second and third years. Their last two years of residency will be 50% ambulatory.
These primary care immersion blocks will include the following highlights:
- Dedicated didactics and clinical experiences on a variety of primary care topics such as diabetes management, hypertension, women’s health, culinary medicine, and addiction medicine
- Longitudinal education on practice management and indirect patient care activities like in-basket management
- Rotations in rural clinics and Salt Lake City-based community health centers
- Medical education opportunities with medical students, peers, and conference attendance and presentations
- Opportunities for residents to request additional educational opportunities in the areas of their choice including a second longitudinal clinic
- Training in advocacy and exposure to politically active community and medical organizations as well as health policy opportunities
- Regular volunteering experiences at shelters and food banks around Utah
- Dedicated mentorship and community building among faculty and other community primary care and specialty providers
