Categorical Internal Medicine Program
Our three-year internal medicine residency program is designed to provide you with the training required for a successful career in a wide variety of settings, from inpatient to outpatient, private to academic, and general medicine to subspecialties.
We offer a balance of inpatient, critical care, and ambulatory training experiences in three distinct hospital settings. We strive to mentor and support our residents to practice at the top of their clinical skill, allowing you increasing autonomy and clinical independence throughout training.
At the University of Utah, our interns are on a 4+1 schedule system, with at least every fifth week spent on an outpatient rotation. As a categorical intern, your +1 ambulatory week will include four or five half-day continuity clinics, a variety of subspecialty and general medicine clinics, and ambulatory-focused conferences. Every Thursday afternoon, you will be excused from clinical duties for dedicated teaching at our intern seminar series. To learn more about these experiences, see our Clinical Rotations page.
Schedules are designed to provide maximum exposure to our many subspecialties early in your residency as you consider your future career. In addition to the PGY1 subspecialty clinics, as a PGY2 and PGY3, you will also have focused subspecialty rotations in both the inpatient and outpatient settings. You will learn the role and contribution of each subspecialty to provide effective patient care, and have the opportunity to develop relationships with faculty members throughout the Department of Medicine.
The University of Utah is a leader in research and innovation, and we are proud to weave those threads throughout our training program. As a PGY2 and PGY3 resident, you will have protected time to pursue your interests, whether it is
