He enjoys walking/hiking, planes, video editing, photography and music. Dr. Dangerfield is an ownership partner in a twin engine plane and sings in two choirs. John V. Dickson, M.D. John V. Dickson, M.D. is an avid ASU sports fan. He has been a Sun Devil member for 40 + years. He also enjoys other Arizona teams and is a season ticket holder for the Phoenix Suns, Arizona Cardinals, and Arizona Diamond Backs. Dr. Dickson has been happily married to Lou Ann for 53 years and enjoys being an active grandfather. Dorian R. Faber, M.D. Dr. Faber is the father to three children and grandfather to 19 grandchildren. He enjoys reading, church service and cruises. Dr. Faber has served three missions to Bulgaria, Australia and Chicago. LaMar M. Fox, M.D. LaMar M. Fox, M.D. was a Clinical Professor and Training Director in Child Psychiatry at UCSD. He, along with wife Betty Lee, raised four sons and currently reside in St. George, Utah. Dr. Fox enjoys reading, writing, travel and church activities. James W. Freston, M.D. Dr. Freston has been married for Margie for 55 years and they have four children, 11 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Dr. Freston was Chief of the GI division at the University of Utah for eight years, six-time winner of the Outstanding Professor Award, and was chair of the Internal Medicine dept. at University of Connecticut for 17 years. He is very active in church, philanthropy and community service. LeRoi "Barney" Gardner, Jr., M.D. Dr. Gardner and his wife Sara reside in El Dorado Hills, California. He retired in 2002 after a busy career in Orthopedic Surgery which included being the team physician for the U.S. ski tea and the U.S. men's and women's soccer teams. Dr. Gardner raced sports cars all over the U.S. from 1979 to 1995– even winning 1st place at Pebble Beach. He also enjoys restoring classic cars. Stanley J. Haberman, M.D. Dr. Haberman and wife Nanette reside in Trenton, New Jersey. He enjoys tennis, aerobic activities, his grandchildren and white water rafting. David R. Haymond, M.D. Dr. Haymond is married to wife Joan and together they have five children, 27 grandchildren and five great grandchildren. Joan and David have served three LDS missions together to Albania, England and Peru/Bolivia and have worked in support of missionaries for the past 23 years. Raymond D. Hlavaty, M.D. Dr. Hlavaty is a life-long resident of Logan, Utah and had held many prestigious positions within the area. He was the instructor for the USU department of Audiology and Speech Pathology, Chief of Staff at Logan Regional Hospital and served as a team physician for both Logan High School and USU. Dr. Hlavaty is an Aggie fan, enjoys fly fishing, hunting, photography, gardening, travel and sports. Frank W. Kleist, M.D. Frank W. Kleist, M.D. and his wife Teresa, are residents of Visalia, California. Dr. Kleist enjoys long distance cycling, traveling, tennis, book clubs and landscaping. A few of his significant achievements include serving as President of Tulare County Medical Society and becoming a Diplomat of the National Board of Medical Examiners. Ned Mangelson, M.D. Dr. Mangelson served as Chairman of Urology Division at IHC Salt Lake Clinic, LDS Hospital, and Primary Children's Hospital during his career. He resides in Salt Lake City with wife Alene and enjoys photography, gardening, playing piano and organ, and traveling. He feels his successful 55-year marriage, his four children and 16 grandchildren are his greatest achievements. George T. Manilla, Jr., M.D. Dr. Manilla and wife Franzi reside in Elko, Nevada. He is a retired pathologist. During his career he developed vaccines for bovine squamous cell carcinoma of the eye and equine sarcoid in horses. Dr. Manilla was also instrumental in the development of dyslexia reading and writing treatments. In his free time, Dr. Manilla enjoys fishing, water color and oil landscape painting. Jerry R. Claude Thomas, M.D. Dr. Thomas considers himself an old country doc! He spent part of his career as a team physician for the Atlanta Braves Major League Baseball team. During his career Dr. White served as Chairman of the Department of Pediatrics at both McKay-Dee and Ogden Regional Medical Center. For 25 years, he served as team physician for Roy High School Athletics. Dr. White enjoys amateur radio, gardening, fishing, hunting and wood carving. Dean Wilcox. M.D. Dr. Wilcox is currently the Vice Chair for Academic Affairs in the Department of Pediatrics at Emory University School of Medicine, where he served as a faculty member form 1980 to 200l. He is also a member of the Certifying Examination Committee of the American Board of Pediatrics. Laurence Gee, M.D. Dr. Gee and his wife Alice live in North Salt Lake City. He specialized in pediatrics until retiring in 1996. His hobbies include researching his family history, working with computer and web-based medical records, pediatrics, and obstetrics. J. Richard Rees, M.D. Dr. Rees is board certified in general and thoracic surgery and practices part-time at the Medical Weight-Loss and Nutritional Clinic in Ogden. Dr. Rees was a surgeon and resident surgeon at the New York Hospital at Cornell University. He was Utah Heart Association Director from September 1972 to 1980. He also did a guest lectureship at the University of Utah College of Nursing Masters Program from 1974-1975. J. Ronald Shaffer, M.D. Dr. Shaffer is one of the original 22 primary care doctors who established the Sacramento Sierra Medical Group in Sacramento, CA. Since then it has grown to 200 physicians and has become the Sutter Medical Group. Dr. Shaffer was a board member for 9 ½ years and now sits on the benefits committee. He and his wife, Carole, have three children and four grandchildren. Dr. Shaffer plays a little golf, likes to read mysteries, and continues to love the practice of medicine. Leo M. Stevenson, M.D. Dr. Stevenson is still practicing Obstetrics and Gynecology although he is only limiting himself to office Gynecology and Internal Medicine. In his residency, he received a call from a hysterical male who said he was bringing his daughter to the labor deck. When the elevator doors opened, it was Dr. Wintrobe and his daughter. He delivered Dr. Wintrobe’s daughter without incident. W. Dean Wilcox, M.D. Dr. Wilcox is an Emeritus Professor at Emery University School of Medicine. He is currently retired and living in Atlanta, Georgia. Joseph R. Armstrong, M.D. Dr. Armstrong and his wife JoAnne have five children, twenty-four grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren. He enjoys doing church service, yard and garden work, duck hunting, sports, and salmon fishing in Alaska. He decided to become a physician at the age of 12 years old and is still happy with that decision. Wendell Bart Christenson, Jr., M.D. Dr. Christenson specialized in Urology and practiced medicine for many years until he retired in 1998. His hobbies include family history research, traveling, and missionary work. He is currently serving an 18-month mission with his wife at the Oakland Temple Visitors Center in Oakland, California. Elbert M. Dansie, M.D. Dr. Dansie and his wife Shanna have been married for 51 years; they have six children and sixteen grandchildren. His interests include cycling yearly in the Salt Lake Century and participating in the MS150. He has traveled around the Cape of South Africa and is planning a trip to Antarctica. His hobbies include fly fishing, reading history books, especially on the adventures of Lewis and Clark. Reed E. Fogg, M.D. Dr. Fogg is a charter member of the North American Spine Society, Founder and Medical Director of the Intermountain Spine Institution, and Founder of the Spine Forum. In addition to medicine, he enjoys fishing, traveling, golf, and doing humanitarian work in Kenya. Thomas J. Green, M.D. Dr. Green and his wife Rosalie have four children and five grandchildren. If he did not chose medicine, he said he would have ended up being an athletic coach of some kind. He went to college on a football scholarship and decided to read all the books he had to buy for class, which is how he ended up in medical school. Eric F. Holt, M.D. Dr. Holt and his wife Marlene have been married for 58 years. They have “four marvelous and intelligent children, seven grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren and all are really close to being perfect.” His interests include being with family and friends at their home on the shores of Payette Lake in Idaho. Rodney Hoyle, M.D. Dr. Hoyle is on the Board of Directors of the Everett Philharmonic Orchestra, associated with the School of Music and Art, and is active in the National Guild for Community Arts Education. His hobbies include playing the violin for the Mukilteo Community Orchestra and rebuilding violins. Conrad J. Knowles, M.D. Dr. Knowles had a solo Family Medicine Practice in Salt Lake City for 30 years. He is now enjoying his retirement by traveling extensively all around the United States, Europe, Africa, China, Brazil, Peru, Chile, and elsewhere. Mark Nicklanovich, M.D. Dr. Nicklanovich specialized in Gastroenterogy. While in medical school, a resident told him “You might as well pack your bags because no one talks to Dr. Burdett (surgeon) like that!” Somehow he survived! His best memory of medical school is getting to know everyone at the senior banquet. Theodore O. Obenchain, M.D. Dr. Obenchain’s significant achievements include publishing a book, The Great Vivisection Debate: Frances Power Cobbe, Experimental Science and the Claims of Brutes. In addition to medicine, he enjoys traveling, reading, exercise, and completed a two year master degree program in creative writing in Cambridge, Massachusetts. George C. Pingree, M.D. Dr. Pingree specialized in Ophthalmology until retiring in 2006. He is the a proud father of five children and nine precious grandchildren. His hobbies include swimming, traveling, and going on family trips and activities. His professional interest is helping third-world ophthalmologist receive surgical training and serving as an ophthalmologist consultant for LDS missionaries worldwide. J. Ronald Shaffer, M.D. Dr. Shaffer is still practicing Internal Medicine in Sacramento, California. He is one of the 22 physicians who founded a medical group which later evolved into Sutter Medical Group, which now has 650 providers in the greater Sacramento region. Walker J. Ashcraft, M.D. Dr. Ashcraft is the Medical Director of Hospice and a member of the Board of Trustees at the Marcus Daly Hospital in Montana. Michael S. Clement, M.D. Dr. Clement is the author of the book Children at Health Risk and an editor of ten other books on preparing for passing board exams. He is a medical photographer and has work displayed in numerous textbooks. He is also a consultant to the Arizona Prenatal Trust, Maternal and Child Health with the Arizona Department of Health Services. Robert B. Gibbons, M.D. Dr. Gibbons is a Master in the American College of Physicians, a Clinical Professor of Medicine at the University of Colorado School of Medicine and the Chairman of Medicine at Exempla Saint Joseph Hospital in Denver. He has also served as Treasurer of the American College of Physicians, President of the Rocky Mountain Rheumatism Society, and Governor of the Colorado Chapter of the American College of Physicians. Kendrick O. Morrison, M.D. Dr. Morrison is married and has five children and 17 grandchildren. He retired as Chairman of the Department of Surgery at Cottonwood Hospital in Murray, Utah. He has served a medical mission for the LDS Church and has a private pilot license, flying a single-engine twin instrument plane. Kent L. Pomeroy, M.D. Dr. Pomeroy lives in Scottsdale, Arizona and practices Orthopedic and Rehabilitation and Pain Management Medicine. He lost his first wife Brenda, in September 2005 from metastatic breast cancer and recently remarried another wonderful redhead, who is keeping him young since she was born two years after he graduated from medical school! He is listed in Who's Who in America, Who's Who in the World, Who's Who in the West, Who's Who in Science and Engineering and Who's Who in Medicine. Donald T. Reay, M.D. Dr. Reay is recently retired as chief medical examiner in Seattle - King County, WA. He is also an emeritus professor of pathology at the University of Washington. A. Mason Redd, M.D. Dr. Redd worked as a Psychiatry faculty member at the University of Utah following his residency training until he retired in 1999. He and his wife, Karen, then served an LDS mission as Area Medical Advisors in the Asia North Area for a year and a half and had a great experience traveling around that area and caring for missionaries. They will celebrate their 50th anniversary in 2009 and hope to gather their seven children and seventeen grandchildren together for a party and a family picture. Paul Sondrup, M.D. Dr. Sondrup lives in Virginia where he is retired as President and CEO of Professional Resource Services. Otto S. Shill Jr., M.D. Dr. Shill retired from Otolaryngology in 1995 and lives in Mesa, Arizona. He presided over the Florida Jacksonville Mission from1995-1998 and has served two other medical missions. D. Ray Thomas, M.D. Dr. Thomas retired in 2002 from 36 years of private practice as a pediatrician in Holladay, UT. He has a great wife, seven children and 35 grandchildren. He served a church assignment in the Philippines from 2003 to 2006 and is currently serving at the BYU Jerusalem Center taking care of students. Dr. Geniec and his wife, Kathryn, have been married for 35+ years and enjoy gardening in their retirement. James Rytting, M.D. Dr. Rytting is a retired radiologist currently living in Houston, Texas. He and his wife, Lavonna Garff Rytting have been married for 50 years and they have four children. Dr. Rytting served as chief of radiology at Brackenridge Hospital in Austin, Texas; chief of pediatric radiology at Children's Hospital of Austin, Texas; and chief of staff at Brackenridge Hospital in Austin, Texas. He was also awarded the Excellency in Residence Teaching Award, Children's Hospital of Austin, Texas in 1986. J. In 2003, Dr. Rich was named president of the California Association of Neurological Surgeons. He has 25+ scientific papers published, two book chapters, and was named as one of The Best Doctors in America - America's Top Surgeons in 1996. Farnsworth, M.D. Lynn Farnsworth currently lives in Mesa, AZ. He served in numerous Army hospitals in the United States and overseas as an OB/GYN and as department chairman and residency program director. After he retired from the military in 2003 he was acting and assistant chairman at the Maricopa Medical Center in Phoenix. Since retirement he has written a book about his great-grandfather and served from 2004-2006 as a medical advisor in Recife, Brazil. G. Kenneth Johnson, M.D. Dr. Johnson lives near Milwaukee, WI. where he practices Gastroenterology at Froedtert Hospital and is a part-time assistant professor at the Medical College of Wisconsin. He practiced for 11 years in Ogden, UT and 27 years in Wisconsin. Between 1972 and 2006 he published 24 peer reviewed papers in various Gastroenterology Journals, many relating to pancreatic-biliary disease. He is planning to begin spending his winters in St. George, UT to enjoy the warmer weather and golf! J. Charles Rich, M.D. Dr. Rich retired from his neurological surgery practice in 2002. He was very involved in his specialty, serving as the President of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons and the American Academy of Neurological Surgeons. He was a delegate to the AMA House of Delegates from the Congress of Neurological Surgeons. He was head of the Division of Neurological Surgery at LDS Hospital and Speaker of the House of Delegates for the Utah Medical Association. He served as Chief Medical Officer to the Salt Lake Winter Olympic Games in 2002. He has been involved with the University of Utah serving on the Alumni Board and the National Advisory Council, along with serving as Past President of the SOM Alumni Association and receiving a Distinguished Alumnus Award from the School of Medicine. He is married to Jasmine, they have five sons, three of whom are M.D.’s. His final comment is that he continues to be a humiliated, yet earnest golfer! K. Gary Shields, M.D. Dr. Shields states he is still alive and kicking, which is probably his most significant achievement. He is retired and lives with his wife Lynda in Salt Lake City. Peter V. Sundwall, M.D. Dr. Sundwall practices family medicine in Murray, Utah. He wrote he is still reasonably alert and reasonably healthy! J. Darrell Thueson, M.D. Dr. Thueson practiced family medicine in Salt Lake City for 32 years until he retired in 2001. He very much enjoyed his medical practice. He and Noni have been married for 47 years and enjoy their five children and thirteen grandchildren.
