Recent physician assistant studies graduate Teresa Duarte, was awarded the 2024 David N. Sundwall Award from the Utah Area Health Education Center (AHEC) during the primary care summit on October 17, 2024. PA Duarte received this award honored for her exceptional contributions to the Utah AHEC program as an AHEC Scholar.
This award celebrates the life and legacy of Dr. David Neil Sundwall, a dedicated primary care physician who tirelessly served communities in need, embodying a commitment to public health in his medical practice. In recognition of Dr. Sundwall’s dedication to improving the health of Utah’s communities, Utah AHEC presents this award to an outstanding Utah AHEC Scholar who continues his mission.
PA Duarte shared her reaction to receiving the award and discussed her experience with Utah AHEC during a Q&A.
How do you feel about receiving this award?
I am deeply honored to receive the David N. Sundwall Award. As a first-generation physician assistant, I am very grateful for this recognition. This award is a profound honor.
Why did you get involved with Utah AHEC?
Growing up in a low-income household in South Central Los Angeles with immigrant parents, I witnessed firsthand the healthcare disparities that shaped my early understanding of the need for equitable healthcare. These experiences ignited my passion for serving the underserved and guided my academic journey.
Tell us about your experience as a Utah AHEC scholar.
As an AHEC Scholar, I focused my rotations on underserved communities, including my time at Redwood Spanish Clinic, where treating patients felt like caring for my own family. Additionally, I completed my Women’s Health and Internal Medicine rotations at the Utah State Prison, and I completed a street medicine elective rotation with Heal Ex. These rotations further solidified my commitment to vulnerable populations.
Is there anything else you would like to share?
I owe so much of my growth to the mentorship of Dr. Ivette López and Darin Ryujin, who have guided and shaped me into the provider I am today. Their wisdom and support inspire me daily, and it is because of their influence that I am determined to continue serving my community as a proud provider of color.
