Guatemala International Rotation A Success

In March 2025, eleven physician assistant (PA) students from the University of Utah, along with four PA faculty members and one pharmacist, participated in the Guatemala International Rotation—an immersive experience focused on clinical service, medical Spanish, and cultural exchange.

The rotation began in Antigua, where students took part in intensive medical Spanish instruction through the Ixchel Spanish School. Each student worked one-on-one with a language instructor in the mornings, followed by afternoon cultural activities that deepened their understanding of Guatemalan history, traditions, and daily life.

The team then traveled to San Lucas Tolimán, located along the shores of Lake Atitlán, where they partnered with the San Lucas Mission. Students worked side by side with local community health promoters—dedicated volunteers trained to deliver health education and provide basic healthcare services in remote villages. Through daily clinics, students and faculty provided care in underserved rural communities, gaining hands-on clinical experience while learning from their Guatemalan counterparts.

In addition to medical work, the group engaged with community-based initiatives supported by the Mission, such as women’s cooperatives, nutrition programs, and sustainable agriculture. These experiences helped students understand the complex social determinants that influence health and wellness in low-resource settings.

This international rotation not only expanded clinical skills and Spanish language proficiency, but also fostered a deep appreciation for community-led public health efforts and the importance of culturally responsive care.
