Inaugural Cardiovascular, Renal, and Metabolism Center Announced
The Department of Internal Medicine is proud to announce the launch of the Cardiovascular, Renal, and Metabolism Center (CRMC), an initiative focused on advancing cardiovascular, kidney, and metabolic health. Led by Srinivasan Beddhu, MD, Professor of Internal Medicine in the Division of Nephrology and Hypertension, and Stavros Drakos, MD, PhD, Professor of Internal Medicine in the Division of Cardiovascular Medicine, the center aims to establish itself as a nationally recognized hub for excellence in these critical areas of healthcare.
The CRMC is dedicated to addressing critical challenges in Cardio-Renal Syndrome (CRS) and exploring the intersections of diabetes, metabolism, cardiovascular disease, and chronic kidney disease. Its mission includes:
- Making significant scientific discoveries
- Improving academic and clinical practices
- Fostering innovative research that drives progress in these interconnected fields
In pursuit of these goals, the CRMC will focus on three primary objectives:
- Building a collaborative network of researchers and clinicians both within the institution and across the nation
- Recruiting and nurturing the next generation of physician-scientists and researchers in cardiovascular, renal, and metabolic health
- Enhancing research infrastructure to support cutting-edge investigations and catalyze advancements in the field
The CRMC will seek increased extramural funding from the National Institutes of Health (NIH), federal agencies, and biomedical associations and foundations to bolster its research efforts. It will also partner closely with key research institutions on campus, including the Diabetes and Metabolism Research Center (DMRC) and the Nora Eccles Harrison Cardiovascular Research and Training Institute (CVRTI).
The creation of the CRMC represents a bold step forward in the department's ongoing commitment to advancing healthcare research and improving patient outcomes. The center's inauguration marks the beginning of what is expected to be a transformative journey in cardiovascular, renal, and metabolic health.
