Artificial Intelligence Retinal Screening at the Utah Diabetes and Endocrinology Center

The Utah Diabetes and Endocrinology Center now has artificial intelligence technology to evaluate retinal screening images. The new technology reads the retinal photos for diabetic eye changes, with results available in minutes. Patients with diabetic eye disease can be referred immediately to the Moran Eye Center.

Patients with type 1 and type 2 diabetes who have not had eye screening in the last year will be offered screening at the time of their appointments at the Utah Diabetes and Endocrinology Center. It takes only a few minutes for the photo and, now, only a few minutes for the read. Our eye screening program has identified eye disease in over 50% of our patients and referred them for treatment.

Dr. Matt Wahl and Dr. M.E. Hartnett facilitate the eye screening program. Their work will be critical for eyesight saving treatment in diabetes.
