John T. Menchaca, MD, Publishes Editorial on AI in Primary Care

John Thomas Menchaca, MD, an Assistant Professor in the Division of General Internal Medicine and Research Assistant Professor in the Department of Bioinformatics at the University of Utah, has authored a new editorial titled “For AI in Primary Care, Start With the Problem” which will be published in the January 2025 issue (Volume 23, Issue 1) of the Annals of Family Medicine.

Dr. Menchaca is affiliated with the Department of Internal Medicine and Biomedical Informatics, where he integrates clinical expertise with cutting-edge research to address everyday challenges in healthcare. His editorial highlights the importance of a problem-first approach to artificial intelligence (AI) implementation in primary care, ensuring that technological innovations are tailored to meet real-world clinical needs. 

In his dual roles as a clinician and researcher, Dr. Menchaca is committed to personalized, compassionate care, prioritizing the unique health concerns of each patient. His research explores how new technologies can make healthcare safer, more effective, and accessible.

Dr. Menchaca’s contributions to the field include advancements in detecting life-threatening infections such as sepsis and developing tools that improve access to treatment for patients with opioid use disorder. He also co-founded Sonara Health, whose innovative software is now used nationwide to support opioid use disorder treatment programs.

Dr. Menchaca earned his medical degree from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center and completed his internal medicine residency with a focus on primary care at Emory University. His work continues to bridge the gap between clinical practice and technological innovation, shaping the future of healthcare delivery.
